Sorry to hear about your misfortune. That seems like a rather dramatic failure. Most computers will fault over to a fail safe condition when something wrong is detected. I would think the proper fail safe mode would have been to disengage the ABS system altogether, not fully lock the front brakes.

We once owned an 1989 Oldsmobile wagon (yeah, I don't believe it either) that would suddenly shift into neutral, even at highway speeds. Your only option was to coast over to the shoulder of the road and wait for the computer to reset itself, which took 30+ minutes. The engine would idle fine during this time, but would stall imediately when put into drive or reverse. They eventually attributed the behavior to a bad temperature sensor that would signal an over heating condition. I guess at the time, the designers thought it best to disable the car until the computer thought the engine had cooled sufficiently. Needless to say, that car did not last long in our garage.

It was a GM product, Phil, so I'm not surprised!-- Don't get me started.
I see things getting worse now that GM stands for Government Motors!
