I want to upgrade my rotors for my Z32 N/A.

Do drilled and/or slotted really stop better?

Also, I think they will look better through my 18" wheels.

Please offer advice, recommendations and comments too. Pros and Cons.

I'll do SS brake lines while I am at it, but will keep the stock calipers...it's just an NA.

Anytime I can dream of improvements to a Z car on somebody else's money, I vote to go to the max.

Slotted and drilled rotors cool better, reduce unsprung weight, and look cool. The cost is the only setback, and if you're paying, I zee no problem!

i have drilled rotors and they feel really nice when applying the breaks. i don't think you're ever going to get the full benefit of drilled and slotted due to the fact that you're never going to come to a stop from 200 miles.

Kieth,

I am glad you got the link.

I think the zinc plated, drilled and slotted rotors with the Evolution Ceramic pads are a great set up for the street.

I love the way mine perform!

Just for future notice, if you plan to do lots of track days...stay away from slotted rotors. They normally develop cracks at the slots due to the heating and cooling of the rotor during use.

Keith,
Does that mean I stop looking for the receipt for my drilled and slotted rotors?

Ten-four on the spirited drives! I like the way you phrased that.
(Assuming you didn't mean the bottled type of spirits)

i hate to say this...I'm going to get flamed and prolly burned...

Drilled and slotted brake disks are a hoax. don't buy them.

No proven facts are available for any of these products for normal street driven cars. Race cars are different...only because most race cars have upgraded master cylinders, shorter throw MC's, stainless steel flexible fluid lines, ceramic pads, etc....etc...etc...

vent's on disks were added in the 80's to promote cooling...good.

slot's were added in the in the 90's to help promote pad gassing....

drilled holes were also in the 80-90's...but for the cool looking effect....

drilled, slotted, and vented disk rotors were just the newest thing to happen to the racing market...if you have a race car.....it's good. If you have a normal car that still can't hit 130 mph...then it's not a race car. Ebay, forums, and the people that own shops that upgrade brakes because the lame slo-mo customer wants the newest gadget to add performance to his ride is the blame for the new hype.

Bring it back to reality now..... Can someone please post a brake disk that is drilled, slotted, and completely vented that is on the market for a/and really used heavy hauler like a truck that weighs over 20 tons that needs to stop constantly in New York traffic? None exist. Why?

Well..truck tires are not as sticky as car tires?.....nope.

Well..truck brakes don't need extreme power that my race car needs?....nope

Well truck brakes are still stuck in the drum/shoes era...and there is no market for aftermarket upgrades....nope....

Common sense guys....

sure..race cars have jumped leaps and bounds on the new technology from newer set-ups....it's been proved....

But when you drop back down to basic physics...they declined in the real up grades.

Why... Friction!

Drums and shoes are actually better if they can be made to work right...75-85% frictional area covered... as to pads only 15-20%

drill a hole...remove a frictional surface...
groove a slot... remove a frictional surface....
and vent's...your keeping the surface area...and inducing better cooling....so sealed vented rotors are good....
But Mass, temp's, area, weight, gas'ing, tire grip, gravity, surface conditions,......etc....a long list a physics major could spend days on......

Drilling and slotting came about in the 80's and 90's due to the compounds of the pads...the years may be off... I'm not an expert...but the car industry hyped about the disk brakes as being better and another part of the industry pushed for just better pads... The old compounds of the pads just built up too much heat, and had no place to gas out, and the heat built up more...causing a weaker brake system... so some idiots decided to drill holes in the rotors, and another set of idiots went for the slicing of the rotors to make a slot.

A different set of engineers came up with better pads.... that didn't need to be gas-vented.... hello ceramic and composite pads.

well...if we use the same pad material in trucks...with drums...what happens? better stopping ability....

From this day forward...trucks will never have disk brakes or rotors...... ever seen a disk brake on a truck.... I wonder why?

But fancy race cars have them....

and the public is weened on having them on everything....

rubber baby buggy's, and mopeds have transfuzed towards the trend because they want to be safe....but they aren't...

Friction requires two things....force applied, and surface area. Drill a hole, or take an inch of friction area off a disk.....to help vent the expelled gasses from the 1950's pads... and your good... But hello...those pads are not sold any more due to the fact that they had asbestos...and the gases don't need to be expelled as much they needed to be to have the same performance.

The best stopping force for any car is it's TIRE!!!

This topic will be pounded on by everyone.....

but for the cliff notes....

Today's disks only need a decent ceramic pad to be just as good as possible.... race cars that are track dependent do need more....

And your brakes will only work as long as you have a real tire on your car.
