have never done this before. i probably don't even have the correct tools for the job. anybody out there have experience with this and have some free time to pop on over. i have a 1978 280Z with the L28.

Do you have the Factory service manual?

I think you can get by with a Haynes manual at the least.

All you need is a 14mm wrench and a 17mm wrench and some feeler gauges. I prefer to do them cold.

Feeler gauges are cheap at autozone. Besides the 14 and 17, you need a spark plug socket and a big (24mm?) socket to fit the crankbolt so you can turn the engine.
Setting the lash cold is done as a preliminary setup so that the car can be safely started and warmed up, so that you can then set them hot. If you do it cold and then do it hot, you will quickly see that the cold settings do not remain correct when the engine is hot.
