my 1988 300zx is shifting late out of 1st gear , around 3000 rpm ,,,, any ideas or tricks would help alot

Have it serviced, sorry to report but Z31 automatics are garbage unless it's a turbo car tranny which is a stronger unit.....

I disagree. They aren't garbage at all. It's a 20+ year transmission. It's a great transmission from a relibilty stand point with proper routine maintenance.

From a performance standpoint it's lack luster.
Assuming you already did maintenance, your best bet is to grab another one from a JY that has a warrenty and spend the weekend swapping it. Before you put it in spend a few bucks and get new seals and do your real main seal and pilot bushing.

A rebuild will be pricey.
OR go all out and swap in a 71C !!!!

I have spoken to more Z31 owners whose trannys have crapped out, one of mine included... The autos on the Z's and 280ZX's were/are very reliable... Just my opinion, don't understand why manufacturers have such a hard time with reliable auto trannys, many different companies have put out bad trannys over the years, Chrysler minivans, Volvo S80's, and too many more, autos have been made since the 40's- 50's, it just gets me that somtimes the technology just isn't there sometimes...

guys thanks for the input, i think im gonna get a tranny and do a swap. its worth doing if u saw the car i paid 600.00 for it cuz the guy lost intrest n it.and the undercarrage of the car s in great condton, and the car stll looks really good for the year.
