Does anyone know if you need a special tool for changing the rear wheel bearings on a 240Z?

I brought my car to a mechanic I am friends with and he had the NISSAN shop manual and a Haynes manual that talked about using some kind of tool to remove the rear wheel bearings...anyone know about this mystical tool?

Also if anyone knows a good mechanic near RI or in RI that can do this...let me know. I'm having the struts, springs and wheel bearings done and it would save me $$$$ to do them all at once rather than have the rear bearings done separate.

Has anyone replaced rear wheel bearings themselves?

:?:

I've done the fronts, twice. But the rears always looked to be beyond my personal ability and I never considered it worth my money to buy a special tool I would only use once (I was poor). My rear bearings were changed by a Datsun dealer when I first owned the car, were changed again by the previous owner when he swapped the stock R180 for a newer R200, and are presently (as in, 'as we speak') being changed by Vinny Bedini.

Wick Humble's "HOW TO RESTORE YOUR DATSUN Z CAR" recommends driving the outer races out with a hydraulic press ONLY. He says you can reinstall new ones that way, too. The HAYNES DATSUN 240Z, 260Z & 280Z Automotive Repair Manual doesn't show this as a function to be accomplished by the street-level owner.

That suits me ~ I have destroyed enough bearings on American and British cars trying to hammer them out with deep sockets over the years ~ I intend to keep my Z car for life, so anything I don't feel confident doing myself, I ain't too proud to let a professional do for me with the proper tools. Yeah, I might save myself $100 today, but end up costing myself $1,000 later.

So basically the rears might have to be sent out some where to be removed and news bearings packed in.

That was what one shop offered to do...but I thought it sounded strange. Now I understand that these rear bearings can be a bear.

I unfortunaltly already have Vinny up to his eyeballs in our 1970 240Z...not sure if giving him a second car right now is the best idea.

Anyone else have a shop they can recommend for this kind of work?
