Hi Guys...

Did my first front pads and rotors on the 88 Z last Friday. Lot of rust on the hubs and rotors. Guess you expect that for a 20 year old car. We didn't do any brake bleeding as suggested by some of the manuals and forums. When I press the pedal at low speed they appear to grab fine. At a higher speed, tested at 35mph, I have to pump and push pedal half to two-thirds to get to a stop. I'm guessing I need to bleed them and this would be another first time. I suspect I need to do all four and this is a two man job of bleeding via the value and applying brake pressure.

Anyone have experience or could help out with the job ? Is there something else I'm missing with the install or breaking something in ? Hitting virgin territory with this stuff and want to do follow-ups correctly.

Yes Kevin, you should flush the lines with fresh fluid and bleed the brakes. The lines should be flushed every couple of years and it sounds like they are likely well over due. If I were closer I'd be happy to lend a hand, it's not a difficult process and it doesn't take too long, but I'm in NJ, so hopefully someone else near you can lend a hand.

Barry, thanks for the input. See what response I get from the group.

Bleed all four brakes till clean fluid come out calipers. See it muck has accumlated at bottom of brake resivour. If the master cyclinder is original it may not be a bad idea to change it also if it looks mucked up. They can be taken off dissassembled cleaned and re-installed, but it easier to get a reman one.

Then there is the muck you can't get out. Start by taking the master apart and clean it real good with bake cleaner and some large pipe cleaners. Use soap and water on the seals. Then do the calipers. Brake fluid is water soluble by the way. Don't use brake cleaner on rubber. Rinse with brake fluid and use brake fluid to reassemble. If you can get seal kits, better yet.

Thanks for the input guys. Useful info.

Last year my mechanic in Canton did the rears on the car. I didn't recall to see if they we're bleed. Would they need it again given only a year lapse ? 8)
