I'm about to help open a 240 hood without the release cable, and I hope to learn a quick trick from someone else who has done this before.

When it happened to me in 1976, the cable snapped near the hood release catch, so I had a frayed cable sticking out of the catch. I was able to jack the car up, remove the L/F wheel for clearance, and spend a few hours snaking my arm up the side of the engine to reach the broken cable. Once I got a ViceGrip locked onto the frayed cable I was able to pull it and open the hood.

The car I will help on will be more difficult. The entire cable system came unbolted from the latch, so there isn't a frayed cable attached to the catch which we can pull.

I'm picturing a long shanked skinny screwdriver forced up into the catch, prying the springloaded catch aside to release the hood onto the safety catch. (All this will be upside down, in the dark, after the engine cools). Unlike my car this one is drivable and can be lifted to any height, but unlike my car, this one has aggressive headers, which may limit the access up the driver's side of the engine.

Any suggestions?

Thnx in advance ~

if the latch is the same as a 260Z, then you can reach it from the clutch side or the header side. Just grab about a 8" screw driver, and the should be a lighhting hole lon the bottom, just stick the driver staight up and toward the rear, and then use the hole for the leverage point, and push the handle of the screw driver to the passengers side of the car.

OK, thnx ~ we'll try that.

We'll also keep the SawZall plugged in, in case somebody's arm gets stuck!

UPDATE:
This worked out fine. Hood is open and repairs are underway. Thanks for the suggestion, AirJockie ~ it worked out just about the way you predicted, altho there was more room on the passenger side than the header/carb side.
