Greetingz to all and the start of yet another zeason of fun!
Went to back 'lil red of the garage after at least a year of no Z fun. (I know Frank, I know :oops: ) Let the clutch out and she would not move; as if something was frozen. After a few tries it broke free but I could still feel resistance while rolling. Decided to press on and see what would happen. When pulling away from my mailbox (about 200 yds away), there was a pronounced metallic SNAP from the rear of the car followed by a clunking noise when moving. Limped back to the garage and parked but have since been otherwise occupied to the point of not looking into the problem. Planning on getting under the car to poke around and try to figure it out, but in the meantime thought this might make for an interesting conversation among us s30 types.(You know who you are). In the 35 happy yrs that 'lil red has possessed me, this is the 1st time I have experienced this phenomenon or even heard of it. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a frozen (and now broken) universal joint or a frozen rear brake to me. The clutch may have been slipping against the resistance until the rear-thing broke. Maybe even a frozen handbrake. Just a hipshot guess of the things I would look for first.

Or else maybe you forgot to unhook the tie-down chain and remove the chocks before backing the car out of the hangar?

I'm guessing rear brake issue. It's been my experience that the rear brakes are the parts of our old Z cars that need the most attention. Rear brake cylinders freezing up are a common problem, especially if the brakes have not been bled and had fresh fluid added in a while. I try to bleed mine every 2 years and so far it's helped prevent these issues. A stuck E-Brake will also create the issue you experienced as Frank mentioned.

We tend to forget the recommended service intervals these old Z cars had, especially when comparing the service intervals required in our more modern cars.

Update: Was finally under 'lil red today and found A problem, but whether it is THE problem remains a mystery. The SNAP I heard waz the 'moustache' bar snapping in two just to the driver's side of where it bolts to the pumpkin! Easy enuff fix, but I cannot imagine what would torque the bar to that degree. The drive and 1/2 shafts rotate by hand so that's good. Going to pull the rear drums and look there.
