Courtesy Nissan shows it as an 'aspirator'.

http://www.courtesyparts.com/aspirator-p-320757.html

This has it in a diagram.

If you buy that part from a local Nissan dealer or from RockAuto, make sure you tell them you're our member so you get a price reduction. 8)

My problem would be if you spent $80 and two hours upside down under your dash replacing it, and something else still made it hum. You can't return electrical parts.

If talking about the ZX, I can't see the diagram, but if your talking about the aspirator fan behind the glove box, it is for the climate control, and that draws the inside air across the temperature sensor located in the dash. The outside temp sensor is behind the front bumper. Also, it should not make any noise. Remove the glove box, pull it out, and check it out. Maybe there is some gunk on the fan. I have one left if really needed.

What Paul said. Very common for them to get old and make noise, eventually fail. Then your climate control will get very confused! A real job to replace them, can be done through the glove box opening but it's a bear.

Makes you really appreciate the simplicity of the 240Z!
