I have a 75 Datsun z with an automatic transmission. Im hearing a wooing type noise coming from the oil pan. The car is currently on a lift. I used a stethoscope to locate the noise. While the car is just idling I only hear it at around 1000 rpm. When load is higher the wooing noise is louder and constant. What can it be?

Woooooo, I would check the PCV system first. I suspect you have 5 quarts of oil in it too. Wooooo, that wouldn't be good. :D

Yes I'm checking the pcv system tomorrow. The oil level reads good on the stick.

I replaced the pcv valve with a new valve and cleaned the interior of the hose. The noise is still there with no improvement. What a mystery.

Have you considered removing the fan belt so you can better locate the source of the noise with a stethoscope?

Yes, I actually replaced the fan clutch, thinking it was bad. Then removed the belts onced I realized the noise was still present. I thought it might of been a torque converter gone bad, so I brought it to my transmission guy. After diagnosing, he pinpointed the noise at the oil pan. We then replaced the pcv valve and cleaned the hose. Still no improvement. What to do?

Thanks frank and all z'ers for the help. I think I need somebody to physically diagnos the car. I live in Stamford. Do you guys know anybody reputable and knowledgable that I can bring it to ? I've done all I can do and I think it's time to throw in the gloves and get help.

Miller Nissan in Fairfield has been a sponsor of ours for several years. If you call them first and tell them you're our member, they might give you a good diagnosis at a reasonable price.

There's a mechanic named Tom Swiggert who works for the BP station in Wilton on Rt. 33 near the Westport town line 203-761-9541. He was trained years ago through the Nissan factory training program. I've found his training and experience to be solid on my ZX. However, he is an employee, not an owner and I have found rates at the garage to be high. I only use him when I am stumped for an answer. But he is close and gets it right. Agree a price before starting work.
For advice over the 'phone, I have found the owner of Zspecialties.com ("Oliver") to be terrific and a good source for parts. He's a true Z affecianado with many Z's in varying states out back. Wish he was local.

So you got that out of the way....now are you gettting blow by out of the hose coming from the Block??? If not, the screen inside the block is ultimatly clogged. If you have blow by, good, move on. Is the noise from the front or Rear??? front: Crank pully seperating from rubber, something belt driven. (take belts of, see if noise goes away.) Rear: Oil Pump,(very rare to go bad, but could.) , torque convertor,(do you have enough fluid in it, or it's bad.) And this is not a mechanical noise per say? You can pinpoint a noise using a hose, or a screwdriver to the ear. Start with this.
