Should there be a gasket that goes between the timing chain tensioner and the engine block ???

I do not see any evidence that there was one there when I took it apart.

The book I am using for reference says not to forget the gasket. My Nissan manual does not mention one.

I bought a new timing chain kit with new tensioner. There was no gasket included.

There is also no gasket included in the engine rebuild gasket set.

Afraid to proceed till I am sure there is not one to install.

Should I use RTV gasket sealer. ???

Thanks Pat

My engine rebuild gasket kit did have that gasket, packaged separately in a small brown paper envelope. It was made with very thin material. I just checked through my spares and couldn't find another one, although I did find a new tensioner, which did not include a new gasket. They are elusive little gaskets!
Never use that RTV silicone gasket maker/sealer stuff for anything.Ever. You can buy rolls of gasket material from NAPA or autozone and just cut your own gasket. Buy the thinnest stock they have.Alternatively, you can make a gasket out of the brown paper that grocery bags are made out of, and saturate it with gasket sealer (not gasket maker, gasket SEALER) when you install it. I use Permatex Super Hi-Tack 97B, which is not an RTV product. This is the route I would go.

YES, you need that gasket. Oil is pumped into the tensioner. At least get the make your own gasket stuff from NAPA or equivelant. Use an exacto knife to cut it out. Do not use RTV, the oil holes are small and you could clog them. I would check with Nissan to see if they have the original, or try MSA www.zcarparts.com
