Post subject:  My brief intro

My name is Chris Wiecking. I am from Simsbury Connecticut. I am a shop manager as well as an ASE Master Technician. I have grown up with Z cars. My mother was driven to the hospital in a 280z and almost gave birth in the car (I will never forgive her for being able to "hold" it). I have owned many Z cars:240, 280, 280zx, Z31T, and a G35 coupe (close enough). I currently have a 77 280 with a LS1 V8 and 6 speed manual. I have never been into "american muscle" but I received such a deal on the engine/trans that I could not pass up the opportunity, so I am hoping that all the purists in the club can cut me a little slack on the V8...

I have been to several club meets and have been amazed at how friendly everybody is. I look forward to attending more events in the spring/summer.

Well that's a beautiful Z car and I sort of remember it from two of our events. You're sort of a big guy, dark hair? Did you go to the August meeting at Alfano Nissan with us?

The LS1 does 'Cobra' stuff to the S30 Z cars. The idea was introduced by Brian Morrow of Scarab Engineering back in the early 1970s, using the 327 (and later the 350) Chevy. We purists would rather imagine the L24-L28 being able to make 300hp, but that's simply not realistic. SqueeZing 50hp from each cylinder just doesn't make for a relaxed daily driver.

I think there are more than a doZen members in the CTZCC with V8s in their S30s now.

Nobody has an old Ford 289/302 in theirs, because the stupid 'backward' oil pan drops directly onto the crossmember, making major surgery necessary to use that excellent lightweight V8 engine. The distributor in the front of the 289 lets you move the engine backward all the way to the firewall, and the whole long block is only 22" wide from valve cover to valve cover, leaving huge room for good headers and power accessories. Carroll Shelby's Cobra 289 squeezed out 271hp with Webers and a cam, but was nearly 200lbs lighter than the cast-iron Chevy.

I was tempted to do that to my 1970 car back in the day, but happily I remained too broke to make it happen.

That was indeed me at those meets.

That would be pretty cool to see one of those Ford motors in a Z car, but your are right about the major surgery. What sold me on the LS1 swap (other than the deal I got) was its all aluminum construction. It is reported that the LS1 with the 6 speed manual comes in weighing only 30 pounds more than the L28 with a 5 speed. There is also no distributor to worry about for firewall clearance so I was able to position nicely. If i could do it over I would of course do a few things differently, but I am pleased with the results.

Nice car, I remember it from the ctzcc fall outing. Have you had a chance to chat with our member "evilc"?

Welcome Chris, nice Z. A job well done. For me, when it comes to your Z, all to your own. Enjoy the Ride. The Chevy sounds nice in a Z, I have seen the Ford 302 and a 351 in Z , and nice sound as well..............But, when you see the good Ol straight 6 blow by the scarab, well, feels more pure. Enjoy the club, Hot Z, can't wait to see it. :D

Busted!!! I have no NEED to sell my Z and I am not actively trying to unload it. I have always wanted to build a Z32TT, or properly build an L28t
