I completed the work on the z31 this weekend. For those that don’t know, the day after I bought the 40th Anniversary 370z, I blew an axle on the 300zx. It went like this: I was at light about 2 miles from my house. I blipped the gas, began to take foot off clutch, made it halfway into a left turn, then BOOM! No parts on the ground, no fluids leaked, engine ran smooth, no noise; clutch pedal feel had remained the same. The car did not move forward or reverse in any gear. I was in a busy-ish road, and a officer had to push me off the road, after I failed at pushing it by hand (little did I know I had left the car in 3rd gear, of course my arms weren’t going to push it anywhere). The officer’s bumper scratched mine, so that added some salt to the wound…anyways: I was awfully puzzled for some time as to what it could be until I got under the car and started rotating the driveshaft by hand. That’s when it became evident that something had gone wrong somewhere in the driveline. I was generally frustrated/busy/too cold to work on the car during winter break (this happened in between 2 semesters of graduate school, during my Christmas break, so I pushed the car back into the garage, took the battery out, put it on a tender and let the Z sit, broken, for 4 long months. At some point in the next four months I discovered that I broke the CV axle. Very uncommon thing to happen in the Z31, especially how I did it. It sheered off at the differential. After realizing that remanufactured axles for my car were no longer available, the hunt to find replacement axle(s) had begun. Luckily I was able to source a junkyard (mileage unknown) set from a fellow on Facebook. Come April, I graduate, and return home. I start peeling parts off the rear suspension/driveline one at a time, not really knowing what I was getting myself into, but being told (by everyone, of course) that it’s a “30 minute job!”. I’m not one to just bolt off, and bolt on another part, so I knew it wasn’t going to be THAT smooth. I get off all the necessary bolts, brackets, free up the brakes, etc. and for the LIFE of me I can’t get the darn broken axle out of the diff. Again, more comments like “it should just pop out! Get a pry bar! It will be a cake walk!” Let it be know that I tried 4-5 pry bars. None worked. After more lost motivation, my dad borrowed one from work, and he got it done. The passenger side one did in fact pop out a lot easier. I decided to replace both axles, so that the mileage/condition would be equal, but I highly doubt this matters. I stripped, sanded and painted whatever I could, and began bolting things back up – a process in itself. I had never taken the rear brakes off, and wasn’t sure what the heck I was doing with those pistons, but eventually got them back in far enough to place the pads on the rotor, and the calipers over that. Great learning experience, with some of my best “French” to date. I did an oil change, put the battery back in, and moved it around the driveway for a bit before cleaning out the garage. The plan is to drive it around a bit this week, (I stalled getting out of the driveway  ) then get it off to the transmission shop to see what the deal is. Wohoo! I’m so happy to be done with this, it was really hindering my progress with the car!

Thanks Karl. Today it was the Z31....for all of 4 miles haha. Finally getting some seat time and bringing it around the block. I found the boost, too, which was nice.

It did not buck at all today Howard. Haven't forgotten about you. I'd say the temps were in the 70s when I tried. It had not been started for a week until today, so the engine certainly wasn't warmed up. Let the trouble shooting begin! |

Are your replacements OEM? I may be mistaken, but I thought the green axles are VLSD axles (for the shiro special)? |

Not sure, to be honest. These came off a junk yard car. Jacob Lafemina sold them to me. I dont think the car would drive if I put VLSD axles in it...right? |

Well- it's about time I drop some info on here. Back in december I removed the rear springs and shocks and installed my Powertrix Ultralite Coilovers. That was fun, and I got some good how-to footage, to help others learn. That will be coming down the pipeline in the next few months. Today was a bit "sketchy" though. I knew the battery was dead, and I had to turn the car around to be able to service the fronts (The car was "nose-in" and I needed it to do a 180) I slowly rolled the car out of the garage, put the battery back in, and went to jump it with a helper car. That's when things got ugly. After hearing how people have completely screwed up the electrical in their cars by switching the poles when inserting the battery, I've become rather OCD about it. But even that being said, I still nearly messed up. I got the poles right, and I got the jumps on the helper car right, but I reversed the cables on my 84 (the positive cable on the ground pole, and vice versa). The fusible links box near the battery started to smoke. I immediately cut the power on the helping car, and my dad took the cables off the Z. I pulled out the fusible link for the battery as it smelled toasty. Turns out the felt insulation bits were swapped, and I screwed up. I eventually got the z to fire up, and no lights are on. Do y'all think I am in the clear? Should I be checking into anything?
