You guyZ are awesome. I'll pass by ACE/home depot tomorrow and scoop some of that acid. I checked out your write-up, nice headers! Thanks for attaching the pic, I'll bring that with me and it should make things a lot easier!

Should I be worried about the acid damaging the rubber plug that is down there?

I'm not sure what it will do with rubber. I'd take the rubber grommet out anyway because there will be some rust under it's edges. You can then clean the rubber up and then reinstall it when your done.

I forgot, last time I went to buy it at home depot, they didn't have it anymore.

I see. Thanks for the tip.

I go back to school in a few days and unless I can find POR locally, I'll have to use a hardware store alternative till then. Let's see what I can muster up.

A vacuum cleaner would pick all the paint flakes, loosened rust and wire wheel bristles out of the wheel well.

A glass jar under the hole will prevent you from pouring acid or POR on your garage floor. Just a thought, in case you ever plan to live there again. 8)

Right~ that's what I did for any of the stuff that had already flaked. Works well.

Ahh yes, must not kill the concrete floor!

I'm just curious about how much sleep you got last night, and how long it took you to get back out into the garage this morning?

Actually, it was a very peaceful night. For the first time in a longtime I wasn't up late looking for deals on Craig's List. Instead, I was thinking of ways to improve the Z. :D

Felipe, Z31s are prone to develop rust n the bottm of the spare tire well (yes, it's a compact in the right rear panel) AND on the left rear under the foam that holds the tools/jack. Liberally POR15 it and you'll be fine.

And that metal plate in the center of the hatch floor is for your fuel tank sending unit. The stock units are known to fail but fortunately Nissan still has them available and they have been redisigned to be more reliable.

Most definitely, John. I am not surprised nor disappointed. :D

I just passed by ACE where I met Greg Emmons (I was talking to a High School friend who works there about my situation and the car, dropped the name "CTZCC" and Greg overheard!)

Aha, thanks for the clarification on the metal plate!

Pops is a painter, so he was able to grab me some rust remover. I'm going to wire brush it, apply the rust remover, wash it out, prime then apply a rubberized undercoating spray that I picked up at ACE for 8 bucks. It should hold me over until I can get my hands on some POR15?

Have I mentioned that I love this club?

Hahahaha did you see my CL ad? Someone's good at putting 2+2 together... lol

It's still for sale, make an offer if it's in your range!!

About time is for sure!

Here's an update on the rust condition. There's still some black spots. Other black areas previously had SOME rust underneath but what's left ain't movin'. Would POR 15 go further than this?

Can you guys advise me for the first go and tell me if it's ready to prime?

Thanks!

POR-15 is called "Paint over rust"... It might be overkill for this kind of thing but you apply it directly over rusted areas (no primer in between). At least that's how I understood it.
