Congratulations Felipe!!!! Man, it's about time!

Great car, better story. Reminds me of when I was a poor college student and bought my 1970 240Z which I still have to this day. Trust me, this Z will be a part of your life forever.

My '84 ZXT was my Dad's from new, when he passed I was honored to have it. It's a lot like yours, just dark grey not black.

Looking forward to Zeeing you behind the wheel! Road trip to Rochester in July??? :D

John, buddy; yes, it IS about time!

Poor college student???? Yup, we're in the same boat. But it makes me proud to say that I paid each and every penny out of my own pocket for my first car!

That thing is MINT!!! Mine will need a few things spruced up but you guys can count on me to get it done, no doubt.

What month is your 84? My build plate says October.

January 1984 build date. It was the GLL model, absolutely loaded, a whopping $22,400 sticker price!

The car sat for a few years when my dad took ill. When I resurrected it, it had 89,000 miles on it and every gasket was leaking and the automatic transmission was shot. So, I replaced every gasket and swapped in a 5 speed.

Life is good.

:D

:) If you scroll further down there are details on where the model code is on your production plate. But yes, digi dash and power seats should mean GLL.

Found it. Yup, it's got the X, indicating GLL. Cool!

And then God said, "All Zs shall have rust!" And he gave me my share. It's not rusted through, and the underside looks healthy. Considering that Pops drove it home in an hour and a half of torrential downpours yesterday, the little moisture we found was reassuring. Today I cleaned it up, tomorrow I'll bring a wire brush to it and hopefully prime it.

A quick side story:

For some reason I always thought the spare tire was situated in the center of the hatch, underneath all the rugs/other barriers. Is this true of the later model Z31s or am I completely out of touch here? It's no wonder I couldn't find the spare yesterday, I was looking for it in the wrong spot! The owner didn't know where it was either, so it gave me a bit of wiggle room in terms of $$ 8). Now that my dad found it while flipping through the owner's manual while at the DMV, he's not letting me live it down! I can picture the day my kid goes on grandpa's lap..."Sonny, your dad was so DUMB when he got his first car, he couldn't find the spare tire!"

On a side note, I think my parents are getting as many laughs and smiles from this car as I am. Considering my mom was anti-any Z for a while, I'll take that any day!

That rust doesn't look that bad. You need to stop it right away though. Scrub it with some oxalic acid to get rid of it. It won't even screw up the paint.

I think all Z31's had their spare there. I wish it came with a fullsize spare (and space for a fullsize spare). Would make it much easier to haul tires to and from the racetrack (can't fit any of my racing tires in that tiny useless compartment!).

You can also try POR-15 (rust converting paint).

For less than $10 you can get a good wire cup and take all that down to the bare metal, then primer it with POR or RhinoLiner or some such. You'll never see rust in there again.

Yea, I don't think this tire has been touched in 30 years. The original can to inflate it was there as well. Tossed that one in the "useless relics" pile.

Do you bring 4 to the track, or just the rears?

Frank, I've got the one that's in the bottom left of the image. I've read a lot about Por15 on here. It brings it down to bare metal, and then I can prime on top, or is it an "all in one"?

You can buy it at Ace hardware. Most hardware stores have it and it's about $10 for 12 ounces. That is way more than you need though. I like using wire wheels too, but they throw a lot of dust and will make your interior a mess. I used one today to bring my r200 to bare metal today. I was outside though. The oxalic acid is what I would use in this case as it won't make a mess. You just clean it with soap and water when it's done converting the rust completely. I agree with the other guys though and would scuff it up and then cover it with por-15 or similar after eliminating the rust.

I wrote a tip thread on it here which explains it in more detail.
