Hello.
My first car was a 1977 280z in about 1987, then in about 2004 I got the Z itch again and bought a 1972 240 for complete restoration, and thereafter a 1973 for driving.

When the world capsized in 200x I sold the project Z to a guy in San Fran who works for Tesla Motors.

Kept the 1973 which has Triples, L24, headers. Then packrats destroyed the interior and wiring so I gutted it and made my own race-car interior and re-wired in an aircraft style with new gauges.

Growing tired of trying to tune my Triples to a tired, oily plugged, 80psi compression L24 I yanked the motor and bought a 1983 L28 F54 along with its close ratio 5 speed and an N42 head.

Engine is torn down and we will do the bottom end with new Total Seal Piston Rings (owner of the company is a friend) and a general clean up with new bearings etc.

Tranny will be next, I've done one before and give it new bearings and syncros.

Then the head gets an Isky 490 regrind, valve job and whatever else it needs.

Put it all back together later this summer and see what happens. Doing all the work ourselves with the help of my friends machine shop next door to my office. Will need help and hope you all don't mind the inquiries.

I am in the aviation world professionally as an Aviation Insurance broker. My company is Airpower Insurance and we have customers around the USA. I have a Yak 50 aerobatic plane and an ownership interest in an Mu2. Certified knuckle dragging, pickup driving, gun owning radical gearhead from out West.

Thanks for having me. I was drawn here by some of your members recent experience with Triple DCOE carbs.

Tj

......."hope you all don't mind the inquiries?".......
That's one of the main reasons for our existence.

If you don't mind being "coached" by such as Vinny Bedini of the
National Champion Bob Sharp racing teams; Brian Little of Datsun
Z Garage; or Rich, Steve, and Scott of RDZ automotive (Research
and Development for Z). If this doesn't fill the bill, there are quite a
few others who have "been there, done that, and got the T-shirt" even
if they are not full-time Z fixer-uppers. And even a few opinionated
old goats like me who pretend they know what they are doing.

BTW I know there are 100 miles separating you from Tucson, but if
you get a chance, check out Chuck Sarra. Chuck moved there from
CT a few years ago, which might by itself be kind of inconsequential.
But he brought with him his original-owner red '72 240Z, which
makes it a nice gain for AZ and a significant loss for CT.

You might be our first member from AZ; Frank will comment on that.

Welcome aboard, TJ. It's a pleasure to finally have a member from AriZona (which, if I'm not mistaken, is the only state to have a Z in it).

Your adventures with the '73 3.01L Stroker engine should make you very happy. Some Z owners squeeze well over 300bhp out of the L28/3.1 with Webers or Solex or ITBs and a good cam. Please carry us along with you on that journey, by posting frequent photos of your progress here on the website.

I am much impressed that you own a Yak50. For those who don't follow aerobatic competitions, the Soviet-made Yakovlevs were the world champion aircraft for several years. They only made a few, then ordered them all destroyed when the updated Yak55 was released. Most good Soviets complied, leaving only a handful of Yak50s in the world today. Don't know how TJ found one, but it couldn't have been cheap. You have to see one of these things fly to appreciate them ~ the CoG is dead-center under the pilot's feet, making the whole plane unstable (which means you can turn it any direction RIGHT NOW).
Anyway, if we impress TJ enough, maybe we can convince him to fly-in and meet us someday. (Colin's memorial Airshow might be an ideal opportunity  ).

Y'all say hello to our newest member, TJ!

Frank T

Thanks again.

I think they made something like 312 Yak 50s and slowly over time more and more came back out of the woodwork and were never really destroyed. There are maybe 40 on the US register and maybe as many as 50 or 60 flying worldwide.

Alas... I am not doing a stroker on this F54 / N42 build as I don't have an LD28 (V07?) crank. If I had a big crank I would be a happy camper...

However the crank I have looks spotlessly perfect and I suppose I will be happy with that.

Motor is torn down completely and washed clean. Next over to Mikes shop (www.superfinishers.com) to do the dimensional checks and lapp all the mating surfaces flat. Then figure out what parts need to be ordered.

Can't wait.

Diesel cranks are available if you search. Last summer they were going for $200-$400. Then of course you have to turn 'em and finish 'em.

Bryan Little built his L28 very well ~ it's a bomb. But today he will privately concede that the only "mistake" he made was not installing the diesel crank and making it a stroker as long as he was in there.

Good thing too, because I have driven his rocket and there's just too much adrenalin in there for me already!

Stroker- Yeah I know.
And I have to get new pistons anyways since I will end up with 87mm bores.

But I don't see a lot of Ld28 cranks out right now.
And the head gasket that is needed is INSANELY expensive.

Going to an 89mm bore is just asking a bit too much of my friends time in his machine shop since this is all free for me. Can do it, but then we need more stones ($60 a pop), removing 2.5mm of material versus 18thou and on and on.

It just adds to the complexity and time.
I want to drive soon. A tight L28 will have to do this time.

Welcome Tj. Sounds like a great Z project, can't wait to see some pics. What town in AZ? You can hook us up with some rust free parts. :D ...and we got good vinyl for you.

We still get a little rust.

I need to get on the picture section and do that.
