What a journey for my Z's glove box cover: Stuttgart - Dallas, Tx. - Tokyo - Dallas, Tx. - Stuttgart. And the customs asked me this morning: who has scratched that old part :D

Post subject:  1600 Fairlady

I discovered a 1600 Fairlady roadster in the backmost edge of a Nissan dealership a few steps from here. I entered, made a speech about my Datsun interests and lo and behold: the dealer explained that he imported the car 20 years ago from California and stored it since then in his store, without restoration etc. and especially as I asked he added that he perhaps would sell the beauty.

Lets see what he wants.

What year is that beauty? The 1967-68s are best. 133hp SOHC engines, 5 spd.

The 1968-70 Roadsters had the 'tall' windscreen, padded dash, lifting door handles, non-toggle switches and an integrated rearview mirror. A rare NON-EMISSIONS engine option had Mikuni carbs and road cams, giving 150hp.

Designations were S211, SP311 and SR311, but I can't tell you which was which. Probably Rick could tell you more.

We looked at one for sale here recently for about $6,000, if I recall correctly. It is all original and sure didn't look as good as THAT one does!

Frank, you're referring to the Datsun 2000 (SRL311) the 2000cc OHC engine introduced in late 1967. The Datsun 1600 (SPL311) that Thor discovered was much more plentiful and produced from 1965-70. It was an OHV design that produced 96hp. The 2000 made 120hp and 135hp with the Solex carb option. They were built on the same assembly line as the 240z and in order to keep up with the demand of the 240z, the roadsters were terminated in early 1970.

The Datsun roadsters boasted features and reliability that the British MGs and Triumphs could not at a better price (sound familiar?). The model that Thor shows actually has the rare 280z factory mag wheels on it and appears to have a modified 240z air cleaner.

:D Thanks, John! I have very little info on the old Roadsters and have learned what little I know from chatting with CTZCC members who own one. Or two. This past fall I visited a local guy who was selling his original owner 2000 for $6,000 and doubled my knowledge about them in less than an hour!

Appreciate the input!

I'm just wondering where Thor will live if he brings this beautiful Roadster home ~ Gaby will surely kick him out of the house. He will need to buy a farm someplace, where he can keep his perfect 240Z, his 2+2, the Silvia, his motorcycles and this Roadster.

I just hope he can cook for himself!

:D

What a scneario, Frank. That's not quite right. :I must correct it immediately. :D

The 2+2 and the Silvia are belonging to Marco.
I have only one beauty (on wheels): the Z.
One Motorcycle, the Moto Guzzi
and - as a daily driver - a Citroen C5 tourer Diesel.
The roadster would be the second classic car and certainly the last.

Of course I can cook for myself. Pasta bake is my specialty ;) Frank, I have to showcase this to you!!

What do you guyZ think about that Fairlady 1600? On the pics it looks better as it actually is.

Thor, do you have a ball park figure of what the owner is asking for it?

Hi Filipe,

What's a ball park figure?
The owner of the Fairlady roadster did not yet quote a price. i'm not sure if he really wants to sell. I'm obstinate ;)

In colloquial English (well, "American" English) the term "ballpark figure" or 'ballpark estimate" means 'in general', or 'a close estimation'. Ein grobe Schätzung.

It comes from the idea that something which is contained within a baseball park is not precisely located, but it can be found within that general area.

A ballpark figure for a 1970 240Z car in good shape might be $25,000 USD. That price can change higher or lower depending on many things, but both the buyer and seller go into the deal knowing they're not talking about $100,000, or about $10,000.

(Of course, if they're talking about *MY* 1970 240Z, they're talking a ballpark figure of about $1,000,000.00 USD. 8) )

So a ballpark figure for this Roadster would be asking approximately how many thousands of dollars the owner might want for it. An answer might be, "between $3000 and $7000 USD", or "in the neighborhood of $5,000 USD".

O.K. Never heard about this, great. Thanks Frank. Perfect definition.
Hope the ball park figure is about $5,000 maximum asking price.
But I'm afraid that he want's more :(

I think you wouldn't sell your Million Dollar Baby Frank, even if a freak would offer that ;)
Likewise :D
