Since my car is very much a work-in-progress, I don't see it as yet ready for the Member Rides section. So, I though I would add a few shots to this forum to further my introduction. I've shot a lot of pics during the teardown, but probably not enough. The shots of the cleaned front-end are from last week. Lucky me, there is no rust on the frame rails and only a couple of surface rust spots on the battery support - no corrosion or rust around its base (orange stains visible in this pic, already scrubbed out). I located and marked a couple of hidden drain outlets so I don't create new problems with seam sealer. The paint code sticker is protected with a foil and tape covering.

Jim, be prepared for the onslaught from Ross and Frank to get your Z loaded to the member rides section. That Z needs recognition!!

WOW! What a great tear-down! I just learned more about Z construction from looking at your photos than I knew before.

Jim ~ you've GOT to enter that car in the MEMBER RIDES! We love to watch progress pix and everyone enjoys seeing Zs being 'reborn'. It feeds some primal fantasy in us.

PLEASE enter it. You can add or delete pix as the car progresses ~ who cares how long it takes? I guarantee people will spend more time studying your work in progress shots than they will looking at completed Zs. Everybody sees completed cars on the road and at shows ~ it's the rare chance to look up under their skirts that we all hope for!

Thanks for bringing this one into our Fold. Seems like it's in pretty good shape to begin with! (How many miles?).

Frank

Hey Jim,
I completely agree with Frank. There is simply nothing more interesting and fun to look at than a Z "in-progress". Keep the pics coming and DON'T wait till it's all done to get them on our Member Rides board!!!! Ross

Thanks for the kind words and I yield to the majority! I will get my act together and get some WIP pics posted to Member Rides. Give me a few days to get some negatives scanned and sized. For the curious, this car has 92,400 on the odo. Always driven in Texas, hence no exposure to salty roads.

Late breaking news: a new Nissan joined the family yesterday afternoon - a 2009 Xterra S in Silver Lightning. I traded my 2000 model well-known German roadster in Speed Yellow with 105K on the clock. More motivation to get the Z back on the road for serious sports car fun!!!

Jim, it's OK to say "BMW" here ~ several of our members eat them for breakfast in track events and autocross.

Just don't get me started about the V8 RX cars.

Frank, the clue was Speed Yellow - not in the BMW color palette but probably the most prevalent color used by another mfr for all press releases. Another hint: mid-engine.

The 911 was the 240Z's first solid food. Ask Bob Sharp!

OK Frank - right brand, wrong model - this one is just for you. And yes, in one of my former lives, I used to regularly beat a 911 Targa in my AX class.

Oh what a beautiful car! (And you let this one get away???)

A friend of mine has a Boxster and lets me drool all over it occasionally.

In the mid-60s I owned a well-beaten '59 Super Carerra with a Super90 engine ~ leaked oil all over the county, even after we "rebuilt" the engine.

I raced it ONCE at my local SCCA track and had to nearly empty the crankcase to pass TechInspec so it wouldn't leak. My buddy/pitman rigged a cigar tube so the dipstick would show "full", then we left 1qt of oil in the case, drove the car 600ft and cut it, coasting into the inspection. We dodged the rollbar requirement by affixing the hardtop and passed Tech. Then we drove the car another 100ft out of the tent and pushed it back to the pit, where he removed the cigar tube and refilled the case.

The car used a gasoline heater which set fire to the underside of the seats if you didn't watch it carefully. Top speed was barely over 100. But there was NOTHING on the road except open-wheel racers which could out-handle it thru the turns. The radio was dead, the windscreen wipers chose what days they worked, and 3rd gear syncro retired before I bought the car. My buddies called it an inverted bathtub, but they were just jealous.

It was a PORSCHE, and I was the only kid in my highschool who owned one. Traded it for my first (of five) Austin Healey, which became an obsession and a bottomless moneypit.

SO glad to own a Z car!

Frank
