By now you've all heard Nissan is bringing back the "Datsun" brand. This was long-awaited and welcome news to most of us until we learned that the brand would be used on lower-end production vehicles in limited foreign markets.

Well the latest news from Nissan is also not so good. According to inside sources, Nissan is rebranding the "Z" for 2014 as well with the next generation. Apparently Nissan has grown tired of these vehicles occupying the last place in the alphabet, which impacts countless other areas, such as listings in automotive trade journals and retail magazines such as Road and Track. So starting in 2014, with the 390, the car will be known as the "A", as in the "390A".

Worse yet, Nissan has consulted it's own legion of internal attorneys who have opined that Nissan can force a rebranding of all vehicles that are already produced and registered dating back to the 240Z(A). Yep - the cars we know and love will need to be converted to "A"s on all badging. To assist owners such as us, Nissan will be sending new badging sporting the "A" for application by owners.

Possibly the worst impact is to our club name, which will need to undergo a change to "CTACC" since no ongoing use of the Z letter will be allowed in conjunction with Datsun and Nissan clubs.

The insider I spoke to stated that the press release on all of this should be out mid-week.

This is an outrage!

I think we may need to get a petition going to get Nissan to rethink this foolish move. What will be next, the "AA" car and then the "AAA" car?

Will Nissan send us little patches that we will need to iron on over all the Z's currently found on all the club merchandise we've bought?

Worst of all, the domain CTACC.com is already registered by some squatter in Korea...which means we'll have to fork over big money just to stay online!

Who's running Nissan these days, Homer Simpson?

- Jim

 I love this Club. I might have forgotten all about the date!

You have to be careful with this stuff, Ross ~ when you told us about merging with the Neon club a few years ago, we actually received resignations !!!

I think the one I liked best was your story about the shipload of "new" 1970 240Z Datsuns which had been discovered intact and run aground on a small uncharted Pacific island!

You should write for somebody for a living!

Frank

Ross, there is a good side to all this, at least we won't have to argue with those Z28 guys anymore as to who actually has the right to call their ride a Z!!

I'm also happy this announcement gives me time to cancel my Tuesday appointment for my Z tatoo!

I'm not biting on this one Ross!

I think it was on the History Channel where one of the former Nissan execs arguing to bring back the Z after it was discontinued said that "we were the only company that owned a letter of the alphabet!".
