I am an accountant by profession, which means that I have a hang-up about folding up maps correctly and using people's proper names.

In line with my hang-up's I have a personal request:

For those of you who use screen names like "Maverick", "Top Gun", "Lovesponge", etc. please consider changing your Discussion Forum ID to your name (e.g. Ross.Williams, Phil.Parent, etc).

The benefits: People will know who they are talking to! This will speed up the process of making friends both on the discussion forums and especially at events. I've heard several stories of people speaking to each other face-to-face at an event and only realizing later that they had been speaking to the same person on the forum!

I know that some people have concerns about disclosing personal information on the internet, but in reality I think the risk of a privacy breach through the disclosure of your full name is extremely slim. I've listed my name/e-mail address for over a decade in various Z and motorcycle related web sites and I have never had a problem. I haven't even heard of someone who had a problem.

So while it's cool to be known as "1ReallyBadAssZ", it's a lot cooler to speed up the process of making friends by giving people your real name.

So my request is: give it a try!

All you need to do is to click on the "Profile" button at the top of the screen and change your nickname to your real name. The prefered format is First.Last

For those that are still reluctant to take this step - no problem. But I'm not going to address you as "1SEXYZ" on the discussion forum!

Ross

Ross,

If our name is on our signature block, then our identity is available.

Cheers, Kirk

Kirk,
I agree with you - having your name on a signature block like you do is another way to address this issue. Most people do not have their names on a signature block though. Ross

As we grow as a club, I find this old post to be more relevant than ever. So I am responding so it moves to the top of this forum again.

Ross,

Thanks for this suggestion. I've wanted so much to provide personal thanks for all the wonderful comments I've received about Colin from members who I know I've met (but may not recognize) and those who I haven't. It has been difficult to match a face to the "Handle" since we are such a relatively young club and many members are not able to make most or even a few club events annually.

You have my support on this and I hope many members avail themselves of the opportunity. I've just changed my profile name.

Thanks again,

Robin Foote

Thanks for addressing this, Ross.
I don't know whether I was one of the catalysts for this, I know I had
mentioned it to someone a time or two in desperation. But if I was, I
appreciate the favorable response.

Don't get me wrong, some of the "Handles" are really creative. But
when you get to be my age, it is hard to figure out who is talking to
me, or who I am talking to, if the identity is camouflaged! And when
we get together at a meeting or event, we have no way to tell who is
whom, except for the few we have known for awhile.

So, another suggestion, if I may, please. The gentleman from Maryland
offered having one's actual name in the signature block as on solution.
In addition, when making up name tags at meetings or events, why not
write the person's real name, followed by the "handle" (if any) on the
next line so the association can be made? Example:

Chris Colgan
"Phrog"

Thanks for listening!.........All Z Best,..............Kathy & Rick

Moving this old post to the top of the list again.

If you have a Forum ID that masks your identity, please consider either changing your ID to your real name or adding a signature block to your posts that contains your name. Either one accomplishes the same objective - getting to know who you are!!

Thanks
