I found this video to be most amusing. It is the road test of the "new" 1982 Datsun 280XZ Turbo. Motorweek sure has evolved over the years. This video shows them testing the car on the highway in traffic, in the snow and doing brake tests with ice on the road! John Davis even has hair!

Enjoy!

In 1982, the $17,000+ cost of a 280zx would equate to over $45,000 today.

My own cheap 1970 Z beat every number the ZX claimed (except weight and HP) and outperformed them 0-70-0, and in the quarter mile.

Once it got rolling, however, it was a very different story. At Bonneville and on the road courses, the aerodynamically slippery and boosted ZX beat every record the 240Z ever set. Was it worth 5 times the price of the original Z car? Individual choice.

It's hard to beat the Series 1 and 2 Z cars for sheer "fun per dollar". I've kept mine as long as I have because of this and the fact that it's so darn easy to maintain. The later cars were awesome in their own right, but their complexity and weight just took some of the charm away that attracted me to the early Z. Life seemed simpler then. I guess you never forget your first love.

Watching the XK-E and the Datsun Z cars morph into auto-geared, air-conditioned, power-steered 2+2 GT cars somehow reminds me of Elvis Presley's rise and fall.
