Awesome! I need to do this next year for sure! That's some great video too, what kinds of cameras are you using? I have a Contour Roam but need to figure out how to mount it. Besides, my footage would be like watching in slow-motion...! |

["need to figure out how to mount it"] The simplest mount I've ever seen was a $4 glass suction cup from Home Depot. With a suction strength which allows me to do pull-ups on it, this cup isn't going anywhere. Secure the camera to it with Flex-Ties and you're done. They even use these to pull dents out of car doors. Of course you can spend lots more if you want a really fancy mount, but I've seen plenty of these being used at AutoX events.

I am using all suction cup mounts. There are cheap ones on eBay that are like $5-$10 that work pretty well. I wouldn't trust a fancy camera with them... but that leads me to answer the second question. The cameras aren't anything fancy at all. The one pointing at the course is either a kodak ZX5 playsport or a Flip MinoHD camera. These are both cheapppp. The only thing is that the audio doesn't work very well--for some reason the grumble of the car is muted out. There might be some kind of anti-wind filter that thinks the car noise is wind and so it cuts it down. It picks up voice just fine though. The camera pointed at me is an old sony cybershot digital camera--those regular pocket-sized ones. I use the audio stream from this camera. The fact that the camera is inside minimizes wind noise as well. The camera that is outside of the car and pointed at the course is a very lightweight small camera. I got it off ebay--you can find a bunch of different kinds if you search "keychain camera". They are really tiny, like 1/4 the size of your phone and incredibly lightweight. And they are cheap! If it falls off and gets blown up, it's not a big deal--and I purposefully use this as the only camera that is outside of the car. If the two other cameras fall off they will stay inside the car. I highly recommend on-board cameras for anybody that is starting to do any kind of performance driving. Not only are they cool tokens to share with friends/family and/or digital scrapbooks (maybe history books if you make it to the top some day...), but they provide a lot of educational feedback for analysis later on. You can slow down the video and pick up on places where you lose speed because of a non-ideal line. Or you can pick out bad habits in your driving, such as hand-position, speed of steering inputs, body position, even where your eyes are looking during while racing. |
