A fabulous turnout today for NYZCC's first annual Sullivan Memorial Fun Run around the Hudson River. The only thing missing from this spectacular day was our friend Tommy. Keith Hultmark and I both had the same experience today. We had the "Sully's Z" plates laying on our dashes by the windshield. In the reflection, Tommy was looking at us smiling during the entire trip. I felt like he was with me all day.

Clive and Dave, thank you for sharing the events of this special day with us. What a fitting tribute to Sully and his family.

I am continually impressed by the strength, determination and resolve of Tommy Jr. on what must have been a very difficult, emotional day for him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Tommy.

Thank you.

Absolutely wonderful ~ Thanks, Clive. I'm really happy to learn there wasn't more damage than that.

Let us know if they can't save that CTZCC decal on the rear hatch!

It's my understanding that Tommy spent his last day on earth cleaning and prepping this Z for the Rhinebeck show. I like that. Let us know what we can do to help, if anything.

Frank

Stopped by the body shop this morning. The Celica was worked on first and man let me tell you these guys are doing a great job! The roof came out perfect. Few more days of prep and she is going in for paint! The Z will be started in a few weeks!

I'm pretty new here and was just looking around and bumped into this. He sounded like a great person. I wish I could have known him while he was around. Glad to hear his son made it out, I hope he will be okay. Anything can happen to anyone at anytime. My prayers go to his son, be strong man, it may not seem like it but this too shall pass :').

Tommy Sullivan was everybody's friend, simply put. He couldn't walk away from a conversation before doing some little thing to make your next 5 minutes better. A lot of us are still crying about this, without shame.

He had two outstanding Datsuns, of which he was very proud. In fact, I undrsnd he spent his last full day on earth prepping his 280Z for a car show with us the following weekend. He was buried that weekend, instead.

Both cars were damaged in the fire, which consumed the entire house in 10 minutes. Thru the efforts of Tommy's friends and our sister club (NYZCC), they are both being restored.

Tommy would have loved that.

Lightweight construction called into question after a police captain and his family die in house fire

It was a tragedy that saddened an entire New York community, and reignited a nationwide debate.

In May, an early-morning fire ripped through the two-story home of Thomas Sullivan, a captain with the Larchmont Police Department. His son, Thomas Jr., awoke to the screams of his father and managed to escape, but Sullivan; his wife, Donna; and his two daughters, Megan and Mairead, all died in the blaze that decimated their unsprinklered home in Carmel, New York, according to a CBS affiliate.

The incident has once again prompted a debate on popular, lightweight construction used in newer homes that homebuilders say have superior qualities over conventional building materials. What's causing concern, however, is the rapid rate at which these materials seem to burn.

An NFPA Journal feature story underscores these concerns and related findings from separate studies by Underwriters Laboratories and the National Research Council of Canada.

"In recent decades, an expanding range of construction methods and building products...often termed 'lightweight construction' have been widely embraced by residential builders for their ability to deliver economy and functionality," says the story's author Alan R. Earls. "However, findings [from both reports] confirmed what firefighters have long suspected about what happens to lightweight construction when it is exposed to fire. In repeated tests by both groups, under carefully controlled conditions, lightweight structures were found to burn faster and lose their structural integrity quicker—in some cases much quicker—than those built with dimensional lumber, with obvious ramifications for the fire service and for anyone who lives in a residence constructed with lightweight materials."

A new discussion group on the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition's LinkedIn page is currently weighing in on this topic and how home fire sprinklers can assist in safeguarding lives and property. (Sign up for a LinkedIn account if you haven't already to join the discussion.) For additional information on the benefits of home fire sprinklers, visit NFPA's Fire Sprinkler Initiative site.
