For those of you (like me) who are keeping your rear drum brakes on your old Z's, I thought I'd share this tidbit with you.

From my 46 years of owning and maintaining an early Z car, I always felt the Z brakes worked well but needed to be maintained on a regular basis, especially the rear brakes. I've replaced rear wheel cylinders and even rebuilt them over the years after spotting that dreadful fluid trip running down the inside wall of a rear tire. My brakes are fine now but I have noticed that the 70-72 rear wheel cylinder prices have shot up dramatically from Motorsport and they no longer seem to sell the rebuild kits for the cylinders. Replacement cylinders are now around $200 each  .. Later models for 73-76 are only around $39.

I recently found that Rock Auto is stocking Centric cylinder rebuild kits. I ordered 4 of them for a mere $5.40 each. Wheel cylinders themselves normally don't where out. They may need to be cleaned and honed (you can buy a hone tool for less than $20). The kit includes the critical cylinder piston seal and a new cover seal. Easy Peesey! :D

Of course you should completely flush and bleed your brakes every 2-3 years to keep them working properly.

Surprisingly I have had great luck with NAPA to find kits like that and various seals and bearings.

Yeah, but you drive one of those fast & shiny new "modern" cars, Karl. There were like what, 40 billion of those made? I was wondering about the old CLASSIC Zs. 8)

I've looked at the websites for NAPA, Autozone and Advance without any luck. Advance's site seems difficult to use as it comes up with wheel cylinders that I know don't fit my car and constantly discards the vehicle information I enter when I do a parts search.

The cylinder kits I received from Rock Auto look correct but I have yet to verify if the new seals fit an old wheel cylinder. I will do that soon and let you know.
