What's the best way to clean a bunch of large dirty engine parts simultaneously? How to machine shop guys do this?

Most machine shops use a "Hotsy", which is heated dip tank with agitation and chemicals. Small auto shops use a "SafetyKleen" style wash tank. Harbor Freight has knock off safetykleen style tanks and sometimes tanks can be found on CL.

Are you talking about something like this?

If so, what's the right solvent to use?

That is for solvent, mild cleaning. The Hotsy is better. Heated vats, basically its water and Red Devil lye and a heating coil. Not sure about aluminum but there is a separate chemical for that. This was my job in Phoenix while I went to school.....remove 1 or 2 engines a day, then dip everything in the Vats. Mostly American V8 engines....so chains and pulleys were used. Talk about a Hot and Dirty Job. I loved the days there was nothing to pull.....I got to Bore the blocks and help in the rebuild room......much cleaner and felt more professional.
