Post subject:  Starting Issue

Recently I have been experiencing an issue where when I turn the key the solenoid clicks but does not engage the starter. It does not happen often or with any consistency. Doing some electrical testing while turning the key showed there was what should be adequate current at the starter led me to thinking it was the starter itself. Changed out the starter and still had an intermittent issue. Figuring it was a defective rebuild returned that starter and put in another one. Everything was fine until the Car Show when it would not start every time you turn the key. I stumbled across this item today on e-bay which seems to describe my issue perfectly. It seems similar to replacing the headlight wiring harness when upgrading headlights.

Anyone else experience this type of issue ?

Also found this page on the same topic.

Seems I should be able to buy a relay and make my own.

I will at least see how much this idea costs.

Have we discussed your ignition switch? They are the most-frequent problem for intermittent starting problems. Sometimes just pulling the plug and cleaning the contacts resolves the issue for another few years.

Sit upside down under your steering wheel. Carefully pull off the white plastic receptacle which connects to the ignition switch under your key lock. Check each connection (male and female) for green corrosion. Have someone send us a picture of you upside down in there. Then we'll talk more. 8)

I should have included the other things I have done as well.
I have already changed the ignition switch, replaced it with a new Echlin one, it was the first thing we tried after changing the starter the first time had no effect, then we changed the lock end as well which at least solved the sloppy key issue.

That type of work calls for my 23 year old son to assist me

OK. Well, your Elect-Trickle system is almost completely different from mine, so now that we've already discussed the only parts our cars have in common (and you refuse to send us pictures of you trying to be a Chinese coal miner), I'm afraid I don't have any more suggestions. You'll have to get ahold of some 280Z expert who's had this problem before.
[HOWEVER, if you ever want to hear a story about how I learned about fusible links, ask me what happened the whole month my 240 shut off as soon as I released the ignition key from START].

Any 280z owners have any issues like this ? ?

When I first got my car I had a few issues where the cars battery would die after leaving it for the week. After charging it cranked pretty slowly but would start eventually. The battery drain was presumably from leaving the key in the ignition but the car started FAR better with new battery cables.

I'm sure your engine bay and wires are much cleaner than mine but I figured I would mention it.

I'd check and make sure all grounds are grounded. Check all plug connection, could be one loose terminal, or corroded.
