So I was hopeing someone could give me some tips on how and what to use to clean the surface rust off of my right rear marker assembly on my 72 240z. For some reason only the right side has surface rust on the metal assembly. I am thinking that the gasket is bad so I ordered a new one. I dont want to buy a new one and would rather clean it but dont know what the best chemicals to do it with would be. Any suggestions out there.

You can soak it in evaporust for a day. However, even surface rust leaves pitting... you might want to have them replated/painted afterwards. evaporust kills rust through conversion mostly, so it usually leaves the old rusted areas blackish. You could also use naval jelly, which works in a few minutes and then has to be washed off. Its also an acid, so it will leave pits where the rust once was and you NEED to wash it off. Either way, its best to smooth and paint/plate after these processes. It will not only make them look better, but it will keep the rust from coming back.

Are you talking about the trim ring or the inner metal fixture (where the bulb goes)?

The inner will be hidden by the lens, so a simple cleanup of the rust should be enough. The trim ring is aluminum I believe and should not rust.

I have several of both should you need a replacement.

Gotcha. Most of them rusted do to moisture and condensation sneaking in over the years. Unless you are a perfectionist, just clean them up and forget about it.

By the way, I was able to buy a NOS set of four marker lights on ebay a few years ago, out of Taiwan I believe. NOS Nissan parts, used them in my restoration.

Thailand also seems to have extensive stores of NOS Z and old Nissan parts. Find them on ebay a lot.

I thought you were talking about the outer trim of the lights earlier. Coulda swore I had one with rust on it once, not white oxidation... I could be remembering wrong. Yeah, just remove the rust completely and recoat them with paint. I'd use something silver or reflective metallic for the inside though.
