Since I am mechanically inclined and electrically reclined, I transplanted the mechanical clock guts of a 240Z into the electro-mechanical clock case of my 280Z. I couldn't get the '76 280Z clock to work at all, but the 240Z mechanism was totally serviceable, and I was able to revive it as described above. The transplant was a bit tricker than I thought, and it seems bas-ackwards to convert a "modern" clock into an "antique" clock. However, there is a lot to be said about good old fashioned mechanical systems. Besides, I love the obtrusive tick-tock of the 240Z clocks.

The 77-78 clock guts are much more robust than all the rest.

OK, now I need some advice.

I've been working on one of my old JECO clocks for more than a week, to send to Thor. I tore it down (that's "American" for "disassembled") and lubed the gears. I put power to it and noticed the motor surges and slows, surges and slows. Sometimes it stops and then goes. But the clock keeps time. The little ticky-thing never misses a beat. The time stays accurate.

My question is: should the little electric motor spin at a constant speed, or is it designed to speed up/slow down (or stop) like that? I'm not sure if I have "fixed" it or not?

I don't want to send Thor a broken clock ~ he already has one of those!

Frank

OK, I have just communicated with John at ZClocks.Com. I described this and he said the motor knows how much tension to place on the mainspring. It is basically working normally now.

So Thor, your clock shall be in the mail to you later this week! :D You asked for something else too, but I'm too tired right now to remember what it was. Hopefully I'll remember before I wrap the clock for mailing.

I also intend to Post ZClocks.com in our Restoration Forum, as well as in our PARTS FOR SALE forum. I feel anyone restoring a classic Z car should know about this great company.

Frank

By the way Thor, I mailed you a box over a week ago with this clock and an SU gasket kit in it. It should be arriving any day now.

ThankZ so much, Frank.
The clock and the SU kit arrived safely.
What a wonderful club.
ThankZ again.

:D

The clock is already mounted and runs perfectly. I fixed an extra electrical connection to an external battery.
Yeah, he dashboard breaths again.
:D

In the meantime the water pump was broken. No problem to get a new one from Nissan Europe. The SUs are adjusted. The Z runs as new

Yeeehaaa
