OK, I know how the twice pipes run parallel out to the driver side, but what about having them run to each side? By the way, I have the header that was 6-1, and now it's 6-2. I'm piecing it together one pipe at a time. I was wondering if I should cross over right under the front of the trani. or split it in the back somehow. I have seen it done, but could use some ideas, and some Pictures would be great. I'm running each pipe as 2". When I get to the back I will run the 2 glass packs, and was wondering if that will do, or should I use a couple glass packs mid way as a resonator. Also, I have seen these exhaust either run above or below the control arm, I prefer above, dose this sound right. So this new 240 guy could use some advice please. :D By the way, when this is done, I can basically put her on the road. :D

"...this New 240 Guy..."
Funny!

The Twice Pipes are wonderful. I'm very happy with mine. I had mine modified to exit the rear valance top-over-bottom, to mimic the great old ANSA exhaust system I first had on the Z back in the day. From MSA, the TPs come side-by-side.

They could easily be split anywhere behind the exhaust collector. I have not seen anyone split them, so I'm not speaking from any experience. But I recall the old ANSA pipes were individually free of each other until they reached the dual glasspacks under the driver's seat; the glasspacks were fused together like long binoculars, then the pipes split apart again until they reached the rear valance. I don't recall if the twin chrome tips were bound together at that point or not, but I clearly recall a far-rear hanger which effectively held them together at that point.

If I wanted to spilt TPs to exit on either side of the valance, I would split them up forward, near the transmission, where there's more clearance. Then I could run either pipe the full length of the undercarriage and modify either pipe as needed to clear any obstacles.

The only glitch I can imagine as I picture this, could be that one pipe turns out slightly longer than the other, maybe giving it a separate exhaust note? The passenger side pipe would have longer to travel than the direct-line driver's side pipe, making it longer.

Also, the MSA glasspacks which come with the TPs are fused together like the ANSAs were, and I sure wouldn't want to be the poor mechanic tasked with separating them while leaving them functional.

ANYTHING can be done ~ you just have to have the time, money, resourcefulness and determination, right?

BTW, while I was researching my own exhaust, I did extensive negotiations with MEINEKE muffler shops. They were the only shop still available which has mandrels capable of bending pipes down to 1-1/2" inside diameter, which I was trying to use to exactly duplicate the old ANSAs. They told me repeatedly they could custom build ANY style of exhaust system under the Z for about $1,000. My entire MSA Twice Pipes system, as modified, didn't cost me that much.

Exhaust work to me is nothing than just plumbing, and yea, money, I plan on doing this at a cheap price. So far I'm running one pipe back to the rear until I decide to either split it up front or in the back. I will have clamps holding the pipes to the header, after that I will weld em on back. Incase of trani removale. So your running basically 4 glass packs? (2 in the middle) Yes, I'm also concerned with the exhaust note if one is slightly longer. But, hey, if it passes DB levels and inspection, for now, that is all that matter, just want to drive her. O yea, just to let you know, I'm just useing pipe section I can get from NAPA. They have straight, 45 degree and 90 degree bends. I can make small bends using the torch and some inserts in the pipe to help contol my bends. In the end, if I like it, I will look into a better system.

No, I have only two glasspacks, both at the end of the pipes. The tips come straight out from the 'packs. I didn't like them being so close to the fuel tank, so I twisted them 90* so they're over-under instead of side by side.

Your exhaust manifold/header is 6-into-2, right? So it wouldn't make any difference where you split the pipes under the car ~ they would always be true duals.

I think you might (might) get away with routing one pipe (#4-5-6) under the oil pan to the passenger side. That way you would have a straight shot back to the rear of the car with both pipes.

OK, and yours didn't sound to loud if I recall, so I'll go with the 2. Yea, I was thinkin about that straight shot all the way back. I noticed 2 humps in the diffy crossmember, but I thought I heard there is an actual crossmeber that both humps are equal size for it was made for dual exhaust. A question that ponders me.

Almost there. I managed to do the dual exhaust but decided to have both pipes run out the drivers side. Unlike the twice pipes, I went on either side of the tranni., have a glass pack on either side of the drive shaft, then out to the side. Now I just need to finish with some of those baffled exhaust tips. Just to tone it done a note, but so far sounds great. I'll get some pics when finished.

Are you losing any ground clearance?

I was able to pull out of my garage, and there is quite a drop, so I think I'm good. I need a rear valance to help hide my work of art. and then the side skirts.

Clifford Research, out in California, is a 6-cylinder inline specialist.
I have a set of their headers and dual exhaust all the way back on
our '70, and IMHO they are the best.
BTW on our "new" ZX, the 4-barrel conversion is on a Clifford intake
manifold as well, am I lucky!

Well I'll keep that in mind. For now, my cost is about $100 to do the whole thing. For now it's about getting it on the road, then after that.....well....it's a life long project. :D
