Here is a series of pics on the caliper overhaul now underway. Glad these units are a lot less complicated than late model cars!

I used Wick Humble's method of getting the pistons out, so the first shot is the fully disassembled calipers. They had a good preliminary cleaning before the teardown.

File comment: After cleaning them with a toothbrush and degreaser, I wrapped the chrome sides in painter's tape to protect them during the rest of the cleaning. They are in great shape for almost 40 years old.

File comment: I polished the cylinder bores with a small piece of micro-fine wet-dry to finish the cleaning.

I'm a bit overdue in wrapping up this activity, but finally got some critical painting finished.

Picking up where I left off, I painted the piston cups with POR-15 to eliminate future rust issues. Yeah, I know - who in the heck sees the inside of the cups. Chalk it up to anal retentive!

Getting ready for assembly, I found a good buy on parts at Autozone. The semi-metallic pads were $19.99 and the caliper kits were $3.99 each (one per caliper). All were special order, paid in advance, delivered direct to the store in 2 days and no shipping charges.

Here is another look at the caliper kits.

And finally, rebuilt and refinished calipers done up in body-color 920 Gold.

ummmmm, real nice, but what about the new O-rings inbetween the 2 cavities. If the tranfere tubes are clogged, could affect piston travel. Just MHO. Well nice that the rebuild parts are still available. I haven't ever replace a caliper on my car, just rebuild it.

The brake and fuel lines are all getting painted metallic aluminum, samples below, as will other bits such as hood lock parts - typically all the pieces that were originally cadmium plated. New cad plating did not survive the budget review process. Fittings are still taped in this shot; string tags help me keep track of where they came from.

Paul - the caliper kit does contain the small seal you mentioned, it just did not show well in the picture. I mentioned the source and price because these kits are not always available. Black Dragon shows a two caliper kit for $14.95 + shipping, the small seal is not pictured. MSA does not list a kit.

Looks great Jim!

You might want to consider making the investment on stainless steel brake/clutch/fuel lines. Relatively speaking, a small investment in a restoration. They last FOREVER and ALWAYS look GREAT! They are pre-bent to exact factory specs and easy to install.

I got mine from Classic Tube: www.classictube.com

Here is the link to the 240Z brake line kit:

You can also search for fuel and clutch applications.

Here are a couple of pics of mine being installed:

Hey John,
All I can say is WOW!!! You've definitely got my interest.

How complete is the brake kit at $225? That is - did you have to purchase additional items to complete the brake line install? I saw an item called Caliper Inlet Lines & Transfer Tubes at $50, sold in pairs (???)

I see we share a common interest in string tags for the electrical connections.

Thanks for the tip.

(Geez, John ~ you really should clean that engine bay up a bit before sending in any photos of it. How do you expect any of us to see anything in there?)
