I disagree with some of the specifications. My 240 was always quicker and faster than these numbers. I got 0-60 in 8sec and topped out at 124mph (stubbornly refused to do 125mph, but that was before I knew about popping the hood open).

the 240Z still showed good fuel economy by registering an astounding average of 20.2 mpg.

I get 22mpg going to and from work and I think I could do better. The new Nissans I drive all get 40mpg+ on the highway

On my first cross-country trip in 1976, I averaged 27+ mpg. That was with the car completely packed with my gear; toolbox, footlocker, seabag, uniform bag and AWOL bag. That all equalled the weight of a second passenger. I still had the 4 spd back then and with the cam I had in the car at that time, 70mph was the most comfortable cruising speed. On one leg of the trip I drove from St Louis to Erie PA overnight (where I slept for 3 days), often touching 90mph. The whole trip, overall, still averaged better than 27mpg.

And by the way, Porky, your 4-Bbl carb is capable of giving better fuel economy than most other carbs. The primary jets are smaller than those on a standard 2-Bbl, and much smaller than the combined volume of two SU side-draughts.

So if you keep your foot out of it (and never open those two monstrous secondaries), you should get outstanding fuel mileage ~ much better than the rest of us can get with our "big" SUs.

Going to Rochester to the Zfest I got 26.5 mpg on the highway doing 70 - 80 all the way. :P

Miles per gallon is very cool and what not, but what really counts is SMILES per gallon....let's just say that my number is off the chart...

I blame the early 5 speed and 3.90! Definitely times where I can be easier on the go pedal

OK, you're probably right. My Z has always had a 3.90 [Z or ZX] differential in it and with the stock 4-spd (the one I had for my cross-country trips), 4th gear was direct-drive (1:1 ratio). Now it has a 5 spd and 5th gear is an overdrive, which means the driveshaft turns more than one whole revolution each time the crankshaft turns. That means I could *probably* get better cross-country mileage now, if I didn't play with it along the way.

Since then I have enhanced the L24 slightly over stock, which always costs a little more fuel. But the result is that I can pass all the cars on that mile-long Woodbridge uphill on Rte15 coming out of the tunnels in 5th gear without any hesitation. THAT is a wonderful feeling and always makes me smile and pat the dashboard at the top of the hill, with the speedo reading 70+. 8)

I bet you do that just to hear the sound of your car in that tunnel
