Found these nice classic brochures. Do you think that some of these cars still exist?

Yeah, Rick probably owns about half of them, and Jimbo has the other half.

I can add the scans of my original 6-page sales brochure if there is an interest. It is not officially dated but from the fine print on the back page I suspect it is 02/70, and the engine pic has no decals on the carb air filter box.

Well.......YEAH....! May we pleaZe zee those?
I mean, who's seen THAT in the past 45 years?

There were so many different variations to the cars thmslvs back in the first days, that it helps to see these little oddities today. That helps us recogniZe a really old Z (or just the parts of it) if/when we run across it.

Remember, we're still looking for a handful of old VINs which haven't yet been accounted for. So it pays to know how to recogniZe a really old car if you see it in a junkyard somewhere. Every bit of education helps.

Here is my somewhat "molested" brochure as unfortunately written on by a wiZened old Asian guy some of you may have heard of

Caveat: the brochure is about 3/8" wider than the bed of my scanner. I centered the pages so there is about 3/16 - 1/4" trimmed from each side.

Well, there you go. I just learned two new bits of information about the earliest Zs:

1. Someone recently asked what brand of tires originally came on the earliest Zs, and I had to give them one of my best "DUHHH" looks. Now I can confidently tell them BRIDGESTONEs;

2. I never knew the rear hatch defroster was an OPTION on the early cars. I always thought Datsun just started putting them on all Zs after a certain date. That would explain why Rick's #13 has a blank insert on the console where the defroster switch would have fit, but has no defroster wires in the rear hatch glass. I still suspect the first 500 or so cars did not offer a hatch defroster option. (Carl? John? Jimbo?). I know SEATBELTS were an option as late as Apr/70, because my car didn't come with them. They weren't mandatory back in those days.

Altho the brochure doesn't give a date for this information, the cars shown don't appear to have the hand throttle control knob beside the choke, so I *assume* () it was printed on or after Jan70. In fact, at the very lowest corner of the very last photo on the very last page, the 'form number' includes the code 270, which might relate to Feb70.

Thanks Jim ~ it was good for me; hope it was good for you! Nice autograph, too.

The 1969 build cars had no rear window defroster, not even as an option. Nor did they have tinted glass. All 240Zs built after sometime in January of 1970 had tinted glass with a rear window defroster standard, not optional.

The spots behind the choke/throttle control panel were for the rear defrost switch (not illuminated on early builds) and a blank for European model running lights.

The brochure that Jim has posted is the most common one for the first year 240Zs, indeed printed in 2/70. Interestingly, the cars depicted are as follows:
*The GREEN one is Allan Robbins HLS30-00006, the infamous car that the model dented the roof and became BSR's first 240Z race car.
*The RED car is HLS30-00007, also became a race car and has been MIA for many years. Once believed to be in California.
* The SILVER car is Tom Bork's HLS30-00008, the cover car on the Jan. 1970 Road & Track and the car that you see in most early magazine reviews of the 240Z. By the way, Tom raced this car last weekend at the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix in Watkins Glen and finished 4th in group, 14th overall! Still good after all these years......

Cars 6 & 8 are proudly members of the ZCCR family!

:D

JT - thanks for the history lesson. Interesting that this brochure was in use so long as I picked it up in March 1971 when I bought the car.

We should all write a Z book. If we lead, Carl will follow.
