Who was Gene Crowe?

In the mid-late '70s, Gene Crowe was Bob Sharp's Crew Chief and lead mechanic. He was responsible for oversight of the pits and all the BSR people at that time. He personally prepared Paul Newman's Zs and, when Newman won two trophies with his car, PLN stepped off the podium and hung his medal around Gene's neck in front of all the cameras and newsreels.

Would be great to find a pic of him and have it posted here. Well it is cool that I have something hand written by him.....not sure who he was writing to though. Maybe Bob?

Probably not. Bob detested working on his own carz. He hired a string of excellent mechanics tho, any one of whom these retainers might have been delivered to. The fact that they're not used makes me wonder if they were intended for one of the Zs which got wrecked.

Tom Cruise raced for Bob for a short time. He was a very fast driver, but repeatedly blew past his shut-off points, apparently hoping to somehow defy the laws of physics. Accordingly, he wrecked several of Bob's expensive Z racers and, also accordingly, Bob let him go. Maybe these retainers were intended for one of those cars. Or, BSR may simply have been providing some modification work for another competitor ~ who knows?

Maybe Vinny Bedini could shed some light on this story.

"Geno" Crowe was well-known in racing circles from the 1950s well into the 1980s. He was considered a master race mechanic and served on the teams of the 1961 Formula 1 Cooper Climax car, the 1965 Chevy "Cheetah" racers, the 1960s Buick race cars and BSR, to name a few.

For all his fame, there are few photos of Gene Crowe in circulation today. He knew everybody, but remained out of the limelight, usually under a race car. He usually didn't get into the spotlight much. In fact, when PLN stepped down off the podium to hang his championship medal around Crowe's neck, it was the only time anyone ever saw Geno cry.

Gene's youngest daughter, Jode, remains in touch with the Sharp family and is a staunch supporter of Bob's son, Scott Sharp.

Evil, I have a technical report from BSR/ Gene Crowe to Nissan Japan from when the team was building the 280ZX V8TT AAGT racecar and asking for help on design/production on titanium valvetrain parts for the V8 engine they used in the racecar. Your retainers and the note made me think of the report..... so it's possible that you have pieces that made were during the development of the AAGT car from 80/81 time frame? I have some pictures of Gene but my pics seem to be too big to post on here... Gene was a great person and ahead of his time IMO.
