I think this is absolutely cool. Had to share. (Thanks Nizar ~ I couldn't make the photo post on the forum). The picture was taken in Pennsylvania USA in 1970, when Joel's 1970 240Z was for sale by his local Datsun dealer. Many of us have pictures of our new Datsuns when we bought them and got them home, but very very few members ever show pictures of their 240Z *BEFORE* they bought it! Frank |

Going down the line from the Z I see an LB110, a KLB110, and a bunch of PL510s. Behind the Z is a PL521 pickup (maybe a 520, this was 1970). But the question I have, knowing what I know about the demand for Zs in the early days, is: how can a dealership possibly have a Z sitting on its new car line?-- by Oct/70, the waiting list at an average dealership would have been about 15-20 deep, whereupon the car would have gone to its new home virtually as soon as it came down off the transporter. I'll bet I know, Rick. Like you said before, the number of 240Zs each dealership received depended upon their sales volume history. This dinky little Datsun dealership, in Chambersburg, PA, probably only rated ONE 240Z in 1970(?). And there it sat, probably fresh off the carrier, while young Pennsylvania farm boys drove past and caught their first glimpse of a 240Z 
We know that Joel (at least) was stricken enough to snap a picture of it, even before it became his! TALK ABOUT LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT!

Well, all I can tell you is that if I drove by and saw a Color Code 919 Sunshine Yellow 1970 240Z just sitting there begging to be bought, it wouldn't have been sitting there for long. I would have closed a deal in about 6 microseconds or less, as that has always been my favorite color on a 240Z. All Z Best,...........................Kathy & Rick |

We transferred this interesting post to THE Z PHOTO GALLERY, since I feel it deserves a place here. I also found that if you click on the photo, then click again to enlarge it, you can get a real close-up of some of the carz. I zee used 1960s cars on either side of the new Datsun cars, all sold by A-1 Motors. Very cool. Frank |

hi everyone ----haven't visited ctzcc for a while ----found discussion of my z on the lot for sale----have become friend with charlie west (his dad started a-1 motors) he found this picture --another friend restored it and made several copies for me---best we know is picture was taken fall of 1970 --my z was sold to dave goodman in december '70-- it was the 2nd z sold from this dearlship ---i "bumped " into dave at a-1 on a saturday when i was picking up parts for my '76 2+2 280z --dave just bought new '78z(which he sold to my 6' 7" best friend a couple of years later)i said it must be nice to have 2 z's-- he said he was selling the '70 z---i closed the deal with dave that afternoon------as you might have guessed, chambersburg isn't "big city"---------joel |

»In the early days of British sales, Datsuns were advertised heavily in the motoring media. Combined with a excellent value and reliability offered by the cars, this promotion led to the staggering success of Datsun UK in the early 1970’s. The level of their achievement can be seen if you consider the sales statistics. Datsun UK sold 6900 cars in the UK in 1971 and by the end following year that number had hit 30,000 only to be more than doubled in 1973 to 60,500! By 1976 Datsun UK held 6% of the entire UK market, representing more than 60% of all Japanese imports and outselling Toyota by nearly three to one. In fact the UK was the only market in the world at that time where Nissan outsold Toyota. If an agreement between the British Government and the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) hadn’t introduced import quotas, fixing imports at their 1976 level, who knows how big Datsun’s market share would have become? A lot of this success was down to Datsun UK’s founder Octav Botnar, who believed that it was the dealers themselves who were the key to success when it came to sales promotion. With the right financial motivation and a simple management structure, the company’s success would be brought about on the showroom floor. In fact Datsun UK probably had one of the smallest management teams of any importer at the time and operated on a single tiered principle where every dealer in the country had direct contact with the management at Datsun UK’s head office. Datsun UK was actually started with a very small staff of only twenty people and very little work was sent to outside contactors. Even their sales literature was designed and printed in-house (in a converted ladies toilet no less!). Dealers were encouraged to advertise in local media and take an active role in the promotion of the company and the marque. Most were very keen to do so having seen their sales double year on year. Collected together here are a selection of these dealer adverts which would often appear together in large promotional features in the motoring press at the time…«

And I'll bet each of those were RHD "HS30" cars, too. I think it's pretty significant that the total 1971 Datsun sales in England matched the 1971 Z sales (alone) in the USA! Considering the problems the Brits were having with their sports cars of that period (wonderful cars, nonetheless), the Z was a wonderful option for sports car enthusiasts on both sides of the ocean. |

I see many Datsuns, that were popular here. 120 AF, B210 Sunny, B310 Cherry/Sunny, Datsun 1000. I remember one episode from Top Gear, where they challenged 3 british made cars against Datsun 120Y. They all failed  Jeremy Clarkson said that Datsun is so reliable, that it is boring.

It's neat that the A1 dealership also sells Wheel Horse products, snow blowers, tillers etc... Looks like the first car in the used car line to the right of the pic is a 66 Chrysler, the owner must have wanted to opt for a little better mpg........  Cool pics
