MotorWeek's Pat Goss explains how complete part assemblies (Raybestos part examples shown) can make installation easier for do-it-yourselfers with fewer tools to buy. Look for the RockAuto catalog in the background!

Don’t forget to check the RockAuto catalog for the parts needed for your next do-it-yourself repair!

I remember horror stories from guyz who tried to replace their compressed suspension struts on the early Zs, and I've seen some actual damage in several guyz' garages from where they lost control of their struts. I never tried it myself ~ it simply sounded too dangerous, and I didn't have the right tools. Paid a little to have Datsun do it and never risked anybody's life.
THe strut assembly might cost a bit more, but it sure is a better idea.

I've done struts more times than I remember, both on z-cars and on lots of other cars too. Used a 20 dollar strut spring compressor from Harbor Freight the last few times, never had any trouble at all. You have to use a little care and common sense, but I think the hazards are a little exaggerated here!

I replaced the springs on my Z several years ago and several of my son's friends cars since without incident.

Doing struts is very easy for me.....Now imagine the cartridge practically welded in the tube. Until you have been there............
