Calling jp260Z....
Calling jp260Z....
Come in, Jay.....?

A 260 2+2 will probably be the final remaining Datsun Z car left on the planet.

These were "sporty family cars" and comfortable GTs, rather than the lighter, more nimble 240 Sports series. Because most of them had automatic transmissions and air conditioning, they were considered well suited for mom to drive the kids to school in style and fill the rear seats and cargo deck with groceries. Because of that, they were seldom modified, beaten or abused....mom simply wouldn't stand for it.

But once they got rolling they were real performers. Bob Sharp drove one as his personal car for the 1974 Zeason (Scott Sharp would have been about 6, in the back seat), and he raced the 2+2 for nearly 2 years, beating track records he set with his 240s. The 2+2 surprised everyone by proving to be better balanced than the 240, and actually more aerodynamic. (The coupe model has also proven to roll backwards downhill at surprising speed with great ease. )

It's surpriZing to find a 4-spd 2+2 offered; they were primarily all A/Ts. And having the carbs replacing the first-year fuel injection is a plus, as well. This one is a "late month" 260, as you can tell by the 100-pound "park bench" bumpers. The lighter 240 bumpers came on the "early month" '74 cars, and can be swapped if desired.

The 260Z engine is arguably the best of the L-series choices; it is a stroked L-24 which takes it to almost "square" bore and stroke. Accordingly, it's capable of staying together at higher revs than either the L-24 or L-28 is. Our member Air Jockey favored the L-26 engine and routinely held it at 8,000rpm on his 'drift' competition car.

I'm pretty much a 260 advocate, due to their scarcity, excellent engines and solid performance records. I consider the 2+2 to be the leading candidate for the title of "world's last Datsun Z car" sometime in the distant future.

If everything is as good as it looks from here, $8500 is a pretty fair price for this 26,000 mile beauty. Expect to replace every bit of rubber on the car, but drive it as you restore it.

So, if one of our distant Clubbies was interested in the car, might you drive down and scope it out for him, Howie? Maybe take a picture or two?

This is precisely the right zeaZon to buy any Z; people would rather give you a price break than to store the car all winter.

Living that close to Darien, it's possible this car might have visited us at Ross' mansion for a picnic or two.

I'd definitely check out the car for anyone interested in obtaining a Z that's in my area.

I thought it was an exceptional looking z at a very fair asking price...

That appears to be a well kept Z.

I hope it finds a good home. I've never really liked the proportions on the 2+2 though, too long. The 2 seaters look just right to me. I appreciate the thought Frank, and that certainly appears to be a very solid and well cared for car.
