Received this note from Fidanza:

"Hey Colin,
If your club wants we could open up a special discount code for the club? Do you have friends/colleagues who may benefit from that?

Thanks,
Fidanza Sales"

So if anyone knows how to set this up with their sales department... Might be a cool deal for Club members.

Any picture of your car is a nice photo!

I've never driven your Z; does it have one of these in it, or did they just use your car as the perfect example of a 240Z?

I've driven Zs which did have lightened flywheels in them, and one had 220hp and a 4:11 rear gear ratio. The combination was fantastic acceleration, but the car lumped at idle and changed speed rather drastically when you lifted your foot on the highway. As the advert says, back country roads and street are where you really benefit from a lighter wheel. I once changed the heavy steel flywheel on my BMW motorcycle for a 10oz aluminum unit and made it idle and take off like a Limey (no offense intended) but I lost that legendary BMW smoothness on the long road trips. I've been after Vinny to install a lighter flywheel in my car for years. He refused. We're making plans to rebuild my gearbox next, which will give us an excellent opportunity to swap in a lightweight wheel if I still want one. I could keep the old one and replace it if I didn't like the lightweight wheel.

Did they mention how much discount they would offer the Club?

Frank, I have a lightweight one in the 96' TT.
My only issue is that under load you can get a harmonic sound that is fairly loud. It only happens at certain RPM levels but it sounds weird the first times you hear it. 8)

Strange. I wonder why that happens?

Here's my theory on why this may happen

The original mechanical hardware supplied with our engines included a crankshaft, flywheel and also a harmonic balancer built in to the front pulley. This balancer was selected based on the design and weight of the original flywheel as well as the dynamics of the piston and rod assemblies. Lightening the flywheel would probably change the "harmonics" of that entire mechanical drive system.

Hey Vinny! What's your take on this? :?: :?: :?:

Here's what DatsunZ garage has to say:

"- Coupe and 2+2 clutches aren't interchangeable because the pressure plate dowel holes won't match the flywheel dowels.
- A Zcar 5-speed will fit on any year Z block and any year L28 clutch can be used. But the throwout bearing "collar" must match the style of the flywheel (coupe or 2+2). In other words, if you have a 2+2 flywheel, you need to change the throwout collar to a 2+2 version. A coupe flywheel uses a coupe collar".

That's beyond my experience.

I'm not sure that is relevant to Karl's "harmonic" issue. :?

Frank, a note from Fidanza regarding a club code and discount:

"I will get with our webmaster and figure one out and send it over.

We would appreciate it, if you guys would go on our Facebook page or Google and like and review us please.

The discount will save 25% off list pricing from the website.

Thanks

Thanks Colin, that's a significant discount! I'll keep that in mind while my gearbox is out later this year.

John, maybe you're right (again). I'll start a new conversation in Tech Talk so we don't hijack this thread.

Frank

OK, Fidanza has set up the code for the 25% discount:

"Hi Colin,

Code CTZCC is setup to take 25% off an order over $100

Thank you, Fidanza Sales"

It would make sense to me if you install a light weight flywheel you would have to change the harmonic balancer. When I worked in a machine shop I learned how to truly balance an engine, and yea, it's touchy. You have to think of it as a whole unit, with lots of pieces. We would shave metal off of the rods so they all weighed the same and same with pistons. The crankshaft itself gets balanced, and then the whole assembly, from balancer to the flywheel, including pistons and rods goes in a machine to balance the whole assembly together. I didn't see that part because it got sent out to a place that did that, and they balanced the crankshafts as well. Now we don't need to get that critical, that was for racing, but I would say a different harmonic balancer would be an Idea.
