Hello All,

I finally got to start the rebuild of the Gold 280Z original 4 speed transmission. It was shifting OK but it was making some noise and the shifter seemed way too loose. I pulled it last October 27, intending to be a "winter project." So, I better get on with it before spring arrives!

This week I began the disassembly. This is something I have done before, but it's been more than 14 years since I last did one of these. I just got reminded how daunting this can be. It's really not that hard but you have to have the right tools - pullers - snap ring pliers etc. and be extremely careful not to drop and lose little parts. I got it mostly disassembled yesterday. The gears and the synchros all look good, but some of the bearings had a lot of play and the 1 1/2 inch mainshaft nut was strangely loose. I just ordered the rebuild kit with new bearings gaskets and seals, to be continued after I get those.

If I started that project in my driveway, we'd get 4ft of snow overnight.

Hello Everyone,

Update on the 4-speed trans rebuild - Going by the manual - I do have a pretty good shop manual for the 280Z -the old fashion way, on paper! Took all the ball bearings out and then got started on the dirty work of cleaning all the parts, drying them and coating with a thin coat of trans oil to get them ready for re-assemble. My least favorite part of the rebuild - but it has to get done. And there of course there is drama.

The transmission has 3 very thin and small double roller bearings that go under each of the gears to the main shaft. And one of them apparently had one pin that decided to make my life difficult by getting lost. Mind you, this was a very delicate operation, putting each of the bearings in a bucket of clean solvent and lightly swaying them to clean them and then gently pulling and drying them. Well one of the pins -1/4 inch long and 2 mm in diameter somehow fell off and I couldn't find it on the table, it must have fallen off.

Not to panic, I got on my knees with a magnet. Found lots of stuff on the floor around the work bench but not the pin. Went online to find a replacement bearing. I did not find any rebuild kits with this bearing, but I did find a manufacturer that, given specific dimensions, may have had the actual double roller bearing. While going to the garage to get the dimensions I spotted a shiny object in between the cars - there it was! The pin was found and now it's in the bearing ready to be assembled. I got the rebuild kit on Saturday and now it's time to re-assemble!

To be continued...

Impressive to say the least!

I had my 4 spd apart a few years ago to correct what sounded like a noisy internal bearing. I lacked the proper pullers/press to do the job myself and thought I would be better off giving the gear cluster to someone more experienced than I. Worked out fine, although it would have been a lot easier if I were in my 20's  . Good luck on your project!

BTW, where did you get the rebuild kit?

This happy ending is for those silly people who don't believe in angels.

Hello everyone,

The re-assembly process was started a week and half ago and everything went smoothly until of course there was drama again. The main and the countershaft bearings at the center plate went in smoothly, and the main shaft assembly and installation into the center main bearing went well - the small ball that keeps the thrust washer from spinning is always a concern, but it did not fall off. Then went in the countershaft into its center bearing, all is well, until I tried to install the countershaft front bearing. It would not go in.

At first, I thought the kit had the wrong bearing, but after some careful measurements with the micrometer, it was the same size as the original bearing within .001 inch, but apparently a bit small. So, after trying a number of things, I used heat - sparingly - don't want to damage the bearing, very targeted to the inside of the inner race and only enough that it went in. After that it was smooth sailing again. New seals, new gaskets, speedo gear and switches are in place, the input shaft turns smoothly and the shifter action is good. Now all I need is a nice day in the next week or two for installation!
