Geez the future looks so bleak when you talk about it like that Frank.

I’ve been absent for a bit, my apologies, but work has continued on my V8 Z project. I’ve accomplished everything I can do with the car. All new drivetrain, suspension, brakes, exhaust, interior, wheels, tires etc. Just yesterday I took the car down to my pal Kurt Thiels shop in Canandaigua for him to install the wire harness and fuel lines and get it running. He’s also going to go through every nut and bolt that I installed to make sure they are torqued correctly. Should be tuned and running sweet in a couple of weeks baring any unforeseen problems. Which I’m sure will pop up.

Then right after the holidays it’s off to the body shop for paint. Hopefully it’ll be ready by spring. Here is an approximation of what I want it to look like, only the entire car in copper with the black BRE stripes.

Stay tuned, the finish line is in sight!

Almost there! Hopefully you can get it out on the road before the big snow comes. I bet you have had a taste of winter already.

I have it from a believable source that this thing actually ran today?

It lives!!

Master mechanic buddy Kurt Thiel took to the wiring like a duck to water and got all of the Datsun body harness to play nice with the Chevy V8 wiring. On first try, with barely a flick of the key, all eight cylinders roared to life. And I do mean ROAR with open headers! Kurt even got the ancillary stock gauges to work but I will have to go with Speedhut speedometer and tachometer as the 300zx transmission doesn’t use a cable and the car now has 8 cylinders instead of 6 for the tach to read.

Then to add the cherry to the sundae, she slid right into gear and was able to move in and out of the shop under her own power. It’s incredibly relieving to know that all those months in my garage assembling, matching and turning bolts on the car paid off and was correct! Still some sorting out to do and fabricating a custom exhaust, but then she’ll be ready for paint. And on the road by spring.

Stay tuned.

A proud Poppa for sure. And rightfully so, John. You, and your team, deserve a Zuper high five for a job beautifully done. I hope you have many happy miles and clear skies. You'll just have to decide if the beast-of the-day will be "Copper" or "Red". You can't make a bad choice. Enjoy! 8)

Project 530Z update:

As the third year (30 months) of rescuing the 1977 280Z from a decades long slumber and giving it a whole new lease on life for the 21st century comes to a close, I’m happy to report that the car is indeed alive, running and driving.

The V8 is very happy in its new home and now it’s just a couple of things to wrap up until the body heads out for a new paint job. Due to the many shipping and supply problems the country is experiencing, I’ve been waiting a month for the new exhaust and cold air intake systems to arrive, but they will finally be here next week. Then installing the new Speedhut GPS speedometer and tachometer (matched to the OEM style of the Datsun gauges).

It’s been a great experience so far and I’d like to close the year with some special thanks to some pals who have helped along the way. Shawn Pritchard, Frank Swiader, Kurt Thiel, Rick Noaker, Russell DiLiberto, Tom Bork and others. I couldn’t have gotten this far without you!

So Happy New Year everyone and let’s welcome in a safe, healthy, joyful and prosperous 2022.

Master mechanic Kurt Thiel has finished fabricating the custom exhaust for the V8 into the Z chassis and it is a thing of beauty! See below!

Those different-length pipes might give you a distinctive exhaust note!

Engine alive and complete! She’s running and driving! Now time to finish the interior then off to paint. And some inevitable sorting out of minor things I’m sure.

Getting closer!

It’s been a while but the project is moving along quickly. It’s now a running and driving car, the mechanicals have been completed. I’m sure there will be some sorting out to come but she’s definitely alive. I am currently finishing up the interior and getting ready to install the MSA body kit. Once that is done, then off to paint.

Stay tuned!
