John, Glad to see Motorfest is on the schedule for this summer.  I'm sure we will have some of our fellow CTZCC members attend again. I know I'm planning to.  Please be sure to post the details on our website again.I think your wheel choice will really help make that Z car a stunner. Years ago I was actually considering trading in my '71 240Z for a 2+2 as my family started growing. I loved my Z so much though that I just couldn't part with it, so I parked it in the garage for about 12 years and ended up buying a Dodge Aspen station wagon  to haul the family around. In hindsight, I'm happy it turned out that way as I eventually restored my Z car and continue driving it today. I'm looking forward to seeing you and the car at Motorfest. Good luck on the engine work. I hope all is in order on the bottom end. Regards, |

UPDATE: It's alive! The refurbished cylinder head assembly and installation went without a hitch. After draining what was at one time gasoline out of the fuel tank, flushing the lines and rebuilding the fuel pump, the 42,000 mile L28E fired right up. Next up: remove and clean up the fuel injectors (a couple are misfiring) and replace if need be. Also, there is a problem with the brake booster and master cylinder, I'm thinking replacement along with hoses, pads, shoes, etc. Stay tuned...

The assembly gets vacuum but does not release, which leads me to believe the proportioning valve is bad. Considering that the car sat untouched for over 25 years, this doesn't surprise me. This week we will disassemble and clean it up, hopefully that will solve the problem. If not, brake parts for a '78 are not all that expensive (as opposed to early 240Z which ARE), so in any event we should be sorted out soon. |

This is like the ZX turbo 15 inch wheels that I will be putting on the car. They are at the powdercoater being refinished into chrome silver. I am in need of center caps for them, if any of you have any that you can part with, it would be most appreciated. Let me know, thanks!

[It seems that the booster is stuck "on"]. I know you know this, but I will remind you that the MasterVac check valve only allows airflow in one direction, and if it doesn't work as advertiZed (bug nests in the tube or the valve gets mistakenly installed backwards) the results are bizarre. https://www.ebay.com/i/312076362485?chn=ps The tube diameters on either end are so similar (and there is no airflow arrow to guide us) that the valve will pop right in there facing either direction. If someone removed the head and happened to pull the vacuum tube off the engine side of this valve, there's a chance it got re-installed backwards. That might not be your problem but hey ~ it's a free check. I'm not even sure the ZX cars still had these valves, but mine was installed backwards when I got #2807 back, and it took me weeks to figure out what was happening with my brakes. You should always try to learn from fools' mistakes.

Not the check valve, problem appeared to be a gummed up master cylinder. Took it apart and rebuilt it, flushed the system, brakes work. Seems to still need considerable pedal pressure, perhaps the booster is not 100%. Will get into that once it's on the road. Now on to replacing rotors, pads, shoes, hoses and wheel cylinders. The car is incredibly clean, an amazing 40 year old time capsule. Other than some cobwebs, dirt and surface rust on the exhaust, the chassis is in incredible shape, and the paint still shines! Two injectors are sometimes misfiring, may have to replace them. But she's alive after a 25 year nap! Stay tuned.....

Wow, a really excellent clean platform to begin on. Shouldn't be hard to build enough confidence in that car to trust it to the wife and kiddos. Great way to indoctrinate the kids into the Z Appreciation scene, too. Who knows, 20 years from now those grandkids might be posting memories on this website about the great 2+2 their grandparents drove them around in when they were small .

Update: She's running OK, nice and smooth. Ran for an hour, great oil pressure, no overheating. However, the ORIGINAL 1978 cooling system showed it's age. The hoses are all shot (planned on that) and the seam of the lower radiator tank is leaking (didn't plan on that but not surprised). So the radiator is coming out for repair and the hoses are being replaced. And all of those shiny new brake parts have arrived from Rock Auto, so the brake system is being totally rebuilt. The 15" 280ZX turbo wheels are on their way to the powdercoater and new tires will be ordered this week. If it ever stops snowing here in western NY, she should be on the road soon. Hoping to take it's first road trip to Carlise Import & Performance in May. Stay tuned....

Looking good. But I'm somewhat surprised  that someone thought it's okay to put a wrench and a power tool on the painted part of the car.  Original paint should be given more respect and more care.

Haha!  I drive Vinny craZy with that. My paint is junk but every time I take my Z there I cover it up on whichever side he's working at, and ask him not to lay any tools or parts directly on the paint. He just looks at me to make sure I'm serious, but whenever he sees me coming into the driveway he walks over and grabs the fender bib before we even say hello. My car needs a paint job more than it needs anything else, but you're right, I've been scolded and taught never to lay any tools directly onto the car. Several safety reasons were cited too, but the main argument is that the customer would hit the overhead if (s)he saw me do that!

I saw a 3/8" combination wrench slip off a fender and into a running fan ONCE when I was a kid. It seemed to stay in there forever, banging up the blades and the radiator before flying straight up into the underside of the ('56 Chevy) hood and off into the driveway weeds. We kids had JUST finished putting triple Strombergs on the car and had it running right, and then had to buy a replacement fan and radiator before we could even drive it. While it was bouncing and ricocheting around under the fan shroud, the only sound I could hear was my old AutoMech shop teacher warning us never to do that. Duhhh.
