Lime Rock Historics this past weekend, 60th Anniversary of the track.
We camped out Thursday night, Friday night then bailed out Saturday afternoon to avoid the rain on Sunday. I returned on Monday for the final day of racing. All the family in attendance great time.
Four Z's provide some excellent fast racing, what an incredible sound those motors made.
Below some of the Z's in attendance, saw John Kish's beautiful Z but some how never took a photo!

2018 will be my 60th anniversary at LRP...yikes!

Thanks Colin, nice shots.
You should have seen CTZCC decals on the 87 car, the 88 car and the 262 car (altho I think the 87 car sold last zeason or the zeason before that, and the new owner might have peeled it off to save weight!)

LOVE that P544 in the background! I've always wanted one of those. Somehow related to a fat-fender Ford, and I've always suspected if you rolled one at speed, it would always come to rest back on its feet.

Yes Jay, an annual event, this was the 35th year for the event:

I think I have made most of them!
Incredible cars, from multi-million dollar Ferrari's to affordable classics. Some photos attached.

Great pics Colin!

It was a great day Saturday at the "Rock", great cars, nice and cool and no rain. Watching those Z's take spots 1-4 in the first Group 3 race was awesome! And yes, Kevin McCarthy and I rode up in my Z to watch the Saturday races. Sorry we missed you. We met up with Paul Marshal who had his blue modified Z parked up the row from mine with a "for sale" sign in his window. Other than attending "Skippy School" about 15 years ago, this was probably the best day I had at Lime Rock! Every car guy should attend this at least once! I've been to this event 4 times.

Wow Colin, 60th year at Lime Rock!!!!

Thanks Colin. That Harley looks like their first twin model, probably about a 1905. I was very young.

When you look at and listen to a Harley engine, your mind should picture one of the old aircooled radial aircraft engines of the 1900s. They usually had 5 or 7 very large cylinders in a star shape, with all piston rods attached to a single crankshaft throw. With 5 cylinders they could fire consecutively 1-2-3-4-5 with a power stroke every 72* of rotation and have smooth power flow.

https://youtu.be/HGKXdYCksAQ [this example has an even number of cylinders, so It uses a staggered firing order. The odd numbered engines usually just fired each cylinder in turn]

The Harley engine design simply cut the top two cylinders off the radial "star" and mounted them sideways in the bike frame, but both pistons were still attached to the single crank throw. The cylinders fired consecutively (1-2), but because the other 3 cylinders were missing, the crankshaft then "coasted" thru 1080* of rotation [3 rotations] before the cylinders fired again. That gave Harleys their distinctive "Thump-Thump-pause-pause-pause-Thump-Thump" firing sound.

https://youtu.be/_-PxRpPgHAM

The famous Buell racing engines fitted a 180* crankshaft into the Harley engine, which makes it sound like a "normal" twin.

Not that you asked.....

John, I wuz 13 years old, I took this photo from the passenger seat in Dad's 1958 TR3 on the short chute headed to the left hander. Dad worked for Triumph so I spent a lot of time in TR's.
It was Press Day for the British Auto Manufacturers, so the journalist's got to drive and wreck a few! In fact I got to take care of Denise McCluggage's poodle while she took one of the TR's out for some laps.
Frank you just amaze me with your outstanding knowledge! Of course I asked, that's why the photos are there.

Wow! That picture brought back some fond memories for me. When I was in the 5th grade I would often stop and stare at my teacher's TR3 which he parked in the lot at my elementary school in Levittown LI. One day after school he caught me standing there looking at his shiney little black sports car and asked me if I liked cars. The repsonse was an obvious ""yes" so he said "hop in and I'll drive you home". That's all it took to get hooked on cars, especially sports cars. While I did putter with some old American modifed muscle over the following years, my true love was for the small foreign marks. They handled way better, were efficient and just looked way cooler to me. I got pretty tight with one of my high school teachers who (to this day I can't believe this) lent me his car to work on. I replaced the water pump and worked on some other minor stuff and he let me drive the car the whole summer into my senior year in high school. I've attached a picture of it and yes that's me at 17 years old. Can you guess the make and year?

Frank T may have seen this picture already.

You know your cars!

I believe it was a 1958 model with a previous racing history. How I'd love to have one now!

Fiat Double-Bubble with Zagato body! Wow!

Actually I know where there are 5 of these sitting in a garage here in CT waiting for love. Didn't we talk about these neglected cars once? The guy is a Fiat mechanic who worked on Irv Rich's PininFarina 124 (no longer a Fiat; actually made by the coachbuilders themselves). I'd recognize his name if I heard it again, but I'd have to have Irv remind me where he is. The name of his shop spoofed the name FIAT somehow. Anybody know who I'm talking about?

** AH! It's Danny at Fun Imported Autos and Toys (F.I.A.T.) in Vernon.

And thanks for the flowers Colin, but I just corrected a mistake I made. After both cylinders fire in the same power stroke, the engine coasts three full rotations (exhaust, intake, compression) before firing again, so the coast is 1080*. I was remembering the French 2-stroke airplane engine (LaRone?) which would have got a power stroke every rotation. Sorry.

Absolutely!!! I haven't been to Danny's for a couple years so I would call first to Zee if he's still there. Also, he probably doesn't work Sundays so we would have to go on a Saturday?

Wouldn't matter what we find there; the Z trip itself would be worth the time spent anyway!

This is him, but I'm having trouble getting him to answer the phone...I would want to know if he still had the Double Bubbles before I went up there.

His web site looks a bit dated also. I'll try him tomorrow. You up for this Saturday the 16th?_
