If only I lived a little closer I'd be turning wrenches with you guys! What a great car. Brings me back to all the work I did on my '71 back in 2001/2002.

Hey John, a couple of questions not to do with mice  . I noticed that you by-passed the coolant line going to the carbs. Any reason for that? Any effect that may have on engine warm-up or operation? Just curious.

Also, did you guys move the car's engine bay data plate to the firewall? My data plate is located on the passenger side inner fender. :?

Hopefully I'll get to see the car in July during your summer get together.

Regards,

Hey John....

The data plate WAS on the firewall, put there by a previous owner to make room for aftermarket air conditioning plumbing. Since I removed the antique-not-working-A/C, I put the data plate back in its correct place, the passenger side strut tower on the inner fender.

I decided to bypass the intake manifold coolant line for a couple of reasons:
* Mainly, it really isn't needed if the car isn't driven in the cold weather (which it definitely will not). No need to pre-heat the air/fuel mixture if outside temps are above 50 degrees. Once the car reaches normal operating temperature, the pre-heating isn't necessary. Driveability on a cold day with a cold engine may be affected, but I won't be driving under those conditions.
* The car in its prior life was running triple Mikuni carbs, the coolant lines had been modified, so the plumbing needed to run a stock setup routing the coolant from around the engine, through the manifold and back was missing. I'm sure I could have dug it up, but decided it wasn't worth the trouble.

Orange Peel update 3-23-17:
OP rolled out of the garage for the first time in 9 months for a trip down to Thiels Import Auto in Canandaigua NY for a final dialing in of all systems and to bring it to life. Kurt Thiel and his mechanic Rick are the best at bringing out the best in Z's so Orange Peel is in good hands. She should be running and driving in about a week, fingers crossed! Stay tuned...

Orange Peel update:

Thanks to the fine tuning talents of Kurt Thiel and Rick Noaker, at Thiels Import Auto, Orange Peels's engine is alive and purring like a kitten (hard to tell from the pic, but look at the fan, she is running!). The rally black hood looks great on the car. Now, some odds and ends such as sorting out the lights, driver window regulator and choke cable and she should be ready to run. Once I get her back home it's time for the interior makeover. Stay tuned....

Looks great John. You and your crew did some really nice work. I hope you get lots of driving enjoyment from it. BTW don't forget about the overflow tube by the radiator cap. 8)

She's really looking good John!

Howard's last entry reminding you to put the overflow tube on brought back a "kinda funny" memory for me when I did my '71 over. I had just completed installing the engine in my newly painted engine bay, hooked up all the connections, double checked all the fittings, filled the radiator and started her up. I was excited that she sounded so good. I noticed that the coolant level started to drop in the open radiator so I topped it up until she decided to belch this huge gush of coolant all over my nice fresh engine bay greatly assisted by the spinning fan. I hope you were spared that experience!

Lol, I got it guys! Once the car gets back to my garage, I am re-doing the interior and finishing up little details. Like the overflow tube.

John,

I'm scratching my bald head trying to figure out what the deal is with the radiator as it appears in the picture you provided of the Z going up on the trailer. It looks like there are vertical baffles of some sort in that picture while in the other pictures I see no baffles. It looks like the same radiator I just bought from MSA. Optical illusion? :?

I suspect that's because the trailer pic is nose-up into the sun, and the garage shot is from above, with no sun.

BTW, your radiator gush was a common problem caused by the air pocket at the top of the cylinder head, which gets trapped under the old closed / cold thermostats when you first refill an empty engine block. The radiator is full and the block is full, but there is an air pocket in the cylinder head just beneath the thermostat, which can't escape until the thermostat opens. Altho your thermostat might be rated at 180*F, it's designed to measure that temperature from water. It takes much longer to measure that temperature from air, and only the air pocket is touching the underside of the thermostat. By the time the air temperature beneath the thermostat reaches 180*F (enough to finally open the thermo), the actual water temperature in the block and head are superheated under steam pressure. As soon as the thermostat pops open, all that pressure gushes upward thru the upper radiator hose and baptiZes the car and any innocent bystanders.

Modern thermostats have a tiny hole in the body which is designed to eliminate this problem. I've also seen mechanics fill the head and much of the radiator (with the bottom hose attached) thru the thermostat housing before installing the thermostat and upper hose. After the upper hose is attached they can fill the rest of the radiator and not experience this unfortunate occurrence.

Finally, some shade tree mechanics have run the engine for one minute at a time, until the thermostat opens while the car is not running, then trickled in coolant until the radiator is full.

Most modern Japanese cars today place a threaded vent screw on the thermostat housing allowing you to release the trapped air under the thermostat.

PLEASE don't ask how I learned that.

Optical illusion. It's the same Champion 3 row aluminum radiator.

Orange Peel update: she's back home and running fine! I got a chance to take her up the road for the first time and she runs like a scalded cat! The exhaust note is awesome! Again, thanks to Kurt Thiel and Rick Noaker of Thiels Import Auto & Race Shop for dialing the car in perfectly. Now it's on to the finish work on the interior, then some minor paint work and she'll be ready for Jayden to display at shows this summer, his dad would be proud. The saga continues....

"Orange Peel" might need a new name, :) .. because I don't see any orange peel in any of Z pictures. lol. 8)

How about "Sweet Citrus" or maybe "Orange Delight"? :D :D :?: Just sayin'.

Definitely a job well done and a project to be proud of John.
