JUST put in the required 2qts. of Red Line MT-90 GL-4. Magnetic drain plug is in place. The MAJOR issue I had with this 15 minute gear oil change was,and still is, a frozen fill plug. After 2 hours we gave up. Nissan installed this plug with some type of thread compound and it is now seized to the aluminum housing. Didn't want to crack housing so I filled it through the temperature sensor hole and then put the sensor back in. DONE. |

Another option is to remove the shifter up top and do it from there. Whatever works.

That seems to be a lot of extra work to disassemble the center console, but it's still another good way to fill the tranny.

In an all-steel application (plug and case) I suspect you could pass a small propane torch over the plug and tap/vibrate it loose slowly. With a steel plug in an aluminum case, I'm not real sure that's a good idea. If the plug expanded faster than the case, you might cause even more problems. In a previous life I've had to drill two small holes in a plug (not exactly this same application) and make a corresponding two-pronged spanner wrench (a "special tool" in Austin Healey parlance) with a long handle in order to torque the plug out. My buddy leaned into the screwdriver slot and I leaned into the spanner. It turned right out. I replaced the plug once I had it out because it now had two little holes drilled into it, but that was more of a mental thing than a mechanical necessity. It just bothered me that a plug had holes drilled in it. I think it cost me $4 to find another one at a junkyard. |

I was able to get a 3/4" drive short extension onto the square plug head and then get a 2 foot wrench on it. I must have applied about 100 Ft.lbs. to that wrench ( in both directions ) and it didn't budge. So I stopped before cracking the case. |

The biggest issue I see about not being able to get the fill plug out is to check the fill level. The FSM suggest you poke your finger in there, haha.

The "sending" unit that I removed, according to the FSM schematic, was actually the Reverse switch. The distance from the floor up to the frozen plug on the drivers side and the one I removed on the passenger side was almost identical. And I made sure to put in the exact amount specified(4pts./2qts.) and the gear oil was just starting to creep out of the hole. All should be good now.
