Was posted today on Bring a Trailer (#7356). Although not by any means an early Z expert (in spite of owning a '72 for 41.5 years...still have it) I see a couple of issues. Overall appears to have had good stewardship & in a rare color palette. Should be interesting to follow for the next week. Santa will be good to someone.

That's weird :? !!!--- Well, instead, let's call it one of those "aberrations" we sometimes find
wherein the year model on the title (1971) doesn't harmonize with what the VIN# and production
date would dictate (1970). The owner got it right in calling it a 1970  ; the DMV got
it wrong . This happened fairly often back in the day because, while the Japanese
model year basically corresponded to the calendar year, some Datsun dealers (possibly not
realizing this?) applied the American practice of considering the last few months' production of
a given calendar year to be the early examples of the upcoming/succeeding model year.

As a follow-up checked back on this yesterday (auction closed on 12/23/15). High bid was $17K which did not meet reserve according to BaT. The Owner posted the following comment on BaT on 1/1/16...

"The car sold off auction for $24K from a bidder here."

Thoughts?

Most of us who have 1970 cars have spent far more than $17K on them if they're safe to drive. The problem is we don't get what we want in return yet if we want to sell them. (Mine is worth more than $1million. Ask anyone 8) ).

Just 8-9 yrs ago this amaZingly restored 1972 240Z was offered at $28K, but was sold in desperation for less than $20K.

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3205

The market has dropped drastically since then, and is now climbing back up. Because there are probably fewer than 2,000 useable 1970 cars left, they are the most-desireous of the first 4yrs, but there are very few of them which are bringing over $20K.

One of the major attractions of the Z is that it was always a cheap car. We have more than 600 Z-owners in the CTZCC today, and very few of them can be called "rich". We like these cars because we can afford them. Some of us got into our Zs for under $3,000 and if we get $10K back for them when the time comes, we can sleep peacefully.

While there are some 1970 cars which are worth $30,000, this one isn't one of them. Jim Frederick has a garage full of $50-$80,000 1969-70 cars. Rick Morgan, Doc Robbins, Jim Arnett, Carl Beck, John Taddonio and a few others have very important 240Zs which are worth tons of money if they ever wanted to sell them. But this car shown on BaT is moving toward the single most-expensive problem any Z can face; it's rusting under the paint and the owner realiZes he would have to sink a fortune into stopping that rust. Rather than pay that much to repair a car which would not soon give him back his investment, he is selling his problem to someone else.

Just my opinion.
Frank

Well said Frank
There' so many problems to sort out and very little aftermarket support compared to other brands.
You can now get a full newly manufactured body for Mustangs, Camaro's, Firebirds, Chevelle's, Challenger's, etc.
http://dynacornbodies.com

Datsuns were built cheaply and performed their intended use well.
Will the market show the appreciation we have? Not yet.
I can't believe that a really mass produced (millions of units) car like a base model 65-70 mustang command such high prices while nice early 240's (which are superior vehicles in many ways) are still to be had for less than 20k.
For example I owned a base 1968 Mustang fastback (Not even a GT) about 25 years ago and sold it for 3k.
I saw an identical car for sale a few months ago asking 38.5k.
Hopefully with the slow appreciation of Japanese autos by collectors the Z will get it's due.
Meanwhile it's good for all us "poor folk" to be able to afford a vintage car thats' so cool.
