Hi Gang:
A fellow Z Car Enthusiast - is taking a Road Trip around America. He left Salt Lake City a couple weeks ago - and has been keeping a Travel Blog on-line for others to follow - if they wish. I have been following it - and thought that perhaps many of you might also enjoy the Trip as well.

His name is Jason Winget and he is driving a 70 240Z - RightHandDrive. Camping out in the Z with his dog most of the time, but getting a hotel room every so often. It is a real adventure.. It is well written, interesting and fun. He is in Maine today -and may be headed down the East Coast in the next day or two… Who knows, he may be passing though a town near you… If so - let him know - and say Hello…

The Blog starts at the bottom, and you have to read upward to get the updates - or you can start at the top… Check it out

This is great, Carl !! I really envy your friend for doing this. I've traveled across the USA in my Z a few times (and across Canada once), but it was back when both the car and I were about 40yrs younger. He choZe the right time of year to do this in a '70 car (no A/C), but Ohhh....his back! I'll bet he stops at each picnic table he sees and lays on it awhile. The Z is far more-comfortable than any other sportscar I ever drove, but still....

I can't communicate with him on FB, but he has to drive past us to escape New England. I can meet him and drive a ways with him if he wants, maybe put him up in a motel for a night, and if he needs any spare parts, we might be able to help him out. Ask him when he expects to pass thru here? We also have a few Z experts in this state if he has any major issues he wants to address.

Frank

I've been in touch with Jason (he's in Maine) and we're figuring out when he might be in CT. I can meet with him and I hope some other Clubbies might join me. I offered to put him up in a motel somewhere and buy him dinner. Don't know what we'll do about his dog, but that's a minor concern for now.
He says his old Z is running fine, but his fusebox is getting hot to the touch, especially his light fuses. I will try to bring some soldering material and maybe an old fusebox with me when we meet. He can use my dremmel to clean up the connections, too. Don't know yet what month his '70 is; if it's a late-'70 it might accept the late-'71 fusebox I have spare here. But the early '70 cars were pretty finicky about electrical parts and don't swap off well with later cars. Would love to take Bryan with me when we meet!
This is a significant achievement today. 40yrs ago the '70 Z cars were new and quite capable of driving cross-country without any hesitation whatsoever. Mine made three such trips and it cost me a tire, one headlamp, and an alternator. But today, most of these cars have 200,000+ miles on them and rust has had its way with many of the electrical connections. This is a brave man who should be viewed as a Datsun Hero for flying the banner cross-country. His Z is marked-up like a race car, telling about his voyage.

If it's at all possible, we should gather a bunch of members to meet him and escort him along the coast in our Zs, and if we can talk him into staying overnight here one night, I'll buy his motel and chow. He might even know Mike Rosann out there in SLC.

I recall a guy made a circuit of the USA in his Roadster about a year ago, and never even stopped to say hello to us when he passed thru CT. Hope Jason has better manners than that!

Frank

Great Al, thanks!

And I think this is something Art Singer should be made aware of. His Z Car Club Magazine might want to do a report on Jason's trip. Carl, do you know whether any magazines are following this adventure or not?

HI Frank - I don't know of any other Magazines that are following, but it is a good idea for Art. That is very kind and generous of you to offer a room and meal... I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.

He really needs one of Dave Irwin's Headlight Relay kits.. to get that current out of both the headlight switch and fuse box. Certainly cleaning up and re-soldering the contacts is a good idea at this point.

My first cross country trip in a 240Z - the original tires were the problem. They were all out of round - and had to be ground down. As I recall, I only found one Bridgestone Dealer between Spokane, WA and Columbus Ohio. Took them all off the Z in Columbus and replaced them with Goodyear's. {there were Goodyear Dealers everywhere!}.

Hope you can get more of the members to join you..

I had ANSA dual exhaust on my 240 each time I drove it cross-country, and I can still close my eyes and hear the unique, high-pitched "angry hornet" drone of those wonderful pipes. Made each day's trip worth it.

Jason seems to have some sort of 'shower head' or 'flower power' attachment at the end of his tail pipe? Maybe it's some kind of spark arrester, or an animal barrier to keep mice from living in there. (?) Looking fwd to zeeing that when we meet and asking a few polite questions. His rhd car must be an HS-30, which will also give me chance to examine one if those up close, and hearing whatever history he knows about the car.

Well, hey....I just heard from Jason again with more details about his trip. He now tells me it is his intention to drive this 1970 RHD 240Z....AROUND THE WORLD.

This Around-the-Country trip is a preparation for that, and an attempt to gain the attention of some sponsor(s) (hopefully NISSAN North America) who will at least help finance his ATW trip.

Jason is trying to reach the utmost corners of the USA on this trip. He's presently north-bound in Maine, trying to reach the sea. Then he'll turn South and take a route which will bring him down I-95. He thinks he might be able to cruise thru here in time to make our final Monthly Meeting at Millers on 14Oct. If so, it would be very cool to meet him and hear his story!

I think our membership director should get Jason to join the CTZCC and we should donate a decal for his car, so he can fly our colors across the USA! Surely we have enough members in various states who might greet him as a CTZCC brother and wish him well !! :D If Art Singer decides to do a feature story about Jason's trip, we might get to zee several distant CTZCC members uniting all along his route!

What do y'all think?

Just discovered something really cool 8).
I've been emailing Jason and Carl Beck back and forth, discussing Jason's Z. When Carl ran the VIN numbers a couple exciting things were discovered:
(1) It's not a 240 at all; it's a REAL Japanese Fairlady Z! It had the 2.0L SOHC engine (since replaced with a 2.4L), mirrors on the fenders, RHD, the works. but that's not all....
(2) Carl tracked the VIN for the S30 (not HLS30) and discovered that Jason's car turns 45 years old THIS WEEK. Jason's car was made 45 years ago this week, so Jason's actually celebrating his Z's birthday by driving it around the country! His dog companion turned 8 the day they left SLC, the Z turns 45 this week, and Jason turns 40 next month!
What a significant way to celebrate your Z's 45th birthday! How cool is that?

Extremely cool! There are nationwide club listings in Art's mag; wondering how/if they might help Jason?
Carl, how does one track the vin like that, to the date of mfg?

Al

HI Al:
Several Years ago - a 240Z Enthusiast in Japan {ENDO KATSUHIKO aka Kats} met a couple of the men that worked at the Z production plant, when the Z's began. They had pictures of the Production Charts for the Z from Calendar Year 1969 & 1970. The charts show production number by the month for both Domestic and Export models. Mixed into the Domestic production are both S30 Fairlady Z's and PS30 Fairlady Z 432's. So you can't be 100% accurate but given that very few PS30's were produced for 1970 - you can get within a week or two of the actual production Date of the S30's. Kats published the numbers originally on the Classic Z Car Club's forum.

FWIW,
Carl B.

Thanx Carl. My 71 and I both have June production dates and I've always wondered just how close we were. Might there be resources for later years?

Al
Were you in Memphis this past July?

Sorry to say that we don't have the actual monthly production figures for 71,72 or 73 for the S30 Fairlady. Nissan did publish the VIN ranges for the HS30 Fairlady 240Z - and by matching the original L24 engine serial numbers between the Domestic and Export models, with the original engine serial numbers for the North American 240Z's - we can usually get pretty close to the production dates for all of them. {there was only one L24 production line - and the numbers are serial}.

Yes, I was in Memphis - had a great time too! It was a little hotter than I'd like.. LOL
