Hey Frank,
Thanks for all the great comments on Jason's trip and his stopover in CT. I'm tracking his route and if he swings thru the D/FW area I'll try to set up a get together with our area clubs.
Jim

Thamks, Jim! We bragged about your perfect Z over dinner last night, and Big Al Babik told Jason about the wheelbarrow you needed to carry home all your awards. Jason's looking fwd to Zeeing your Z.

I caught up with Jason at Rick's Back 40 late this morning. He and Rick were providing some TLC for Rick's collection, which was more labor-intensive than one man could do. Altho he needs to head South today to hopefully reach the DC/VA area, he wanted to start his morning by lending a hand to some attention Rick's cars needed. Nice guy!

Jason told me he was able to completely replace his original fuZebox with an old 1971 unit I had kept from the old Club Parts Car (Oct71 240Z). He used a Dremel to clean up each contact and added a drop of solder where needed, then figured out a way to just make it hook right up, and everything works. He dutifully returned all the tools he borrowed and all the spare parts he didn't wind up needing.

Because Green Bay doesn't win if I don't watch their games, I had to say goodbye to him and Bernie (and Rick) about 1300. He kept saying he had to leave soon and head South, but then he kept looking for more and more projects to do  I wouldn't be surpriZed to learn he's still there.

Godspeed, Jason Winget. You will be a happy Z memory for us, and an "Ultimate Road Trip" fantasy for everyone who feels chained to his/her daily life. Thanks again Carl Beck, for alerting us to the opportunity to meet and greet a true Z pioneer.

Frank T

A Post for Frank:
Green Bay Packers- Oh YES, we have to watch the Packers!

My Daughter is a Great Grandchild of Hurdis McCrary. 1929 Green Bay Packers. {Grandmother's Father}
Her Grandfather, also from Green Bay - has had Season Tickets since then.

Gannett Wisconsin Newspaper
07 Nov. 2004
"This season, we’ll look back each week at the Green Bay Packers of 75, 60, 40 and and 10 years ago."

1929
On Nov. 10, the Packers swept the season series over the Chicago Bears with a 14-0 victory in front of 15,000 fans at Wrigley Field. The Packers’ two victories over the Bears were by a combined margin of 37-0. It was a costly victory, however, as Packers quarterback Red Dunn was lost for the season with a dislocated shoulder. Hurdis McCrary scored both touchdowns for the first-place Packers (8-0) in the span of just a few minutes. McCrary scored on a 15-yard pass from Dunn, then intercepted a Bears pass on the next series and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.

Not Z Related but fun..
Carl B.

At Frank's suggestion, I just sent an e-mail to Art Singer about Jason and this Z journey. I think it would make a great article and get Jason some wider recognition and support.

Thanks for the help with the e-mail Frank.

:D Haha! This was at lunch up in North Haven. The cars and the cute Airedale (Bernie) drew a lot of attention and some comments from customers coming and going as we tried to waddle from the restaurant back to the cars. Jason picked up the tab over all our arguments. A good guy, but we got him back that night with a steak dinner.

Bernie is known as the "Hero Dog" because he scared away a very large bear which was pushing its snout into their tent while camping one night. The bear retreated to a point btwn the tent and the car (the car was their only point of safety) and they were camping totally alone away from everyone else; there was nobody to help. It all ended well but Jason turns a shade of pale and looks uneasy if you mention the word 'bear'. He drove away and slept in the car that night and returned for his tent in the morning. He prefers to sleep in the Fairlady instead of the tent now. I reminded him that the southern bears don't hibernate like northern bears do; he can encounter a Florida black bear at any time of the year, and blackies are always unpredictable.

Heard from Jason just 5 minutes ago; he's made it down to the DC area and is being put up by a Z enthusiast there. He says his car is running well and the fuZebox (which had been a concern for the first 3wks) is only warm to the touch now, and everything works again. He has a glovebox full of replacement fuses and that is one less problem on his mind. Those two huge "sunflowers" on the rooftop cargo rack are rallye lights which are ridiculously bright. He also has a hidden LED bar in the grille which floods the roadway btwn the headlamps almost perfectly. All that current had been making his fuZebox hot to the touch and he was concerned, especially when his wipers quit during Friday's storm. No such worries now, so we can lawfully claim to have contributed SOMEthing significant to his journey. I hope he keeps us posted on his progress; I'd love to have him meet Jimbo and Carl on the Florida coast, Jim Arnett in Richardson TX, Dan Lindquist in Battleground WA, "Wild Bill" James if Jason rolls thru Nebraska, and Mike Rosann in SLC.

Those of us who are following Jason Winget in his trip around the country know he has driven south thru the Carolinas and deep into Georgia. He thinks he will get into Florida today. He's staying wherever he can find a parking space large and safe enough for his 1970 Fairlady Z. He sleeps in his Z with his navigator, Bernie.

He and Bernie (his Airedale dog) plan to drive all around the circumference of the nation, without any specific planned route beyond general compass directions. He is living sort of hand-to-mouth and altho he's not asking for any help, he never refuses it when it's offered. I figure his trip should cover about 12,000 miles. He's already a month into the journey, and it might take another month to get him back to SLC Utah.

ANY OF OUR MEMBERS who might be in the general path of Jason's and Bernie's route, PLEASE let him know if you are willing to meet with him and maybe share a day telling him about your area. We fed him and put him up in a motel for a night when he came thru CT, and showed him Lucky#13 (which he got to DRIVE!!!), so the CTZCC will remain in his active memory for awhile. If you can contact Jason (Datjunky@GMail.com) and tell him you're a CTZCC member, you are almost assured a brief visit at the least. Please monitor Jason's progress here:

https://www.facebook.com/Doin-it-in-a-D ... e_internal

and let him know if he's getting close to you.

Jason has already heard from our Florida member Carl Beck, and our runaway Salt Lake City member Mike Rosann, and they plan to meet when Jason and Bernie come their way. Carl is trying to coordinate Z clubs ahead of Jason's position to be on the lookout for him, in case they can meet and assist him in any way.

Even if you only have an hour to spare with him, this is a grand opportunity to meet with a true Z adventurer and hear some great stories about how the Z spirit lives around our country, and connects us invisibly. Any help you are able to lend is highly appreciated, and will further the name of the CTZCC. I think it's very cool that we were the first Z Club to learn about Jason's trip and meet him (thnx, Carl Beck), and that our member Mike Rosann is waiting for him in SLC when his journey ends! 8)

Any other applause along the way, from any of our members in any state, is greatly appreciated.

Frank T

Jason and Bernie have made it all the way down to the southern-most tip of our continental country; Key West Florida. Technically, they're as far from home now as they will ever be on this journey. No matter what they do now, they will only be driving closer to home.
Jason reports it's almost too hot to enjoy down there.
Coming up the left (Gulf) coast of Florida, Jason can finally meet (our members) Carl Beck and Jimbo Frederick. They will be the first CTZCC members along Jason's actual route since he left CT.
Altho the Hawaiian islands are the farthest Southern point of the USA, and Alaska is the farthest Western point, navigator Bernie has no plans to guide them there on this trip.

I got a phone call from Carl Beck this morning, reporting that Jason was on his way to zee Carl as we spoke. Jimbo Frederick is expected to join them at Carl's and the three of them planned to install an engine into one of Carl's Z cars. There is probably no better way for three Z nuts to get acquainted than to work together on a Z project like that.

Jason will no doubt get to zee Carl's famous Baja Rallye Z car, and Jimbo's famous 22-car collection of low-VIN Zs (Z-Mecca). https://youtu.be/zN-Z6Zt8F1U

This will no doubt be one of the most-incredible highlights of Jason's entire trip. With the aftermath of hurricane Patricia laying across his path in Louisiana and Texas, I would not be surpriZed if Jason choZe to hang out in West Florida for a day or three. 8)

Heard from our Florida member Jimbo Frederick this morning, that he and Jason converged on Carl Beck's garage ystrdy and did a lot of car work together. Jason's Fairlady got another oil change and some tidying up underneath, Carl's perfect 1972 240 got an engine transplant and all the fluids checked, and Jim arrived in his own RHD Fairlady Z, much to Jason's amaZement and amuZement  . One of the highlights of Jason's trip was zeeing Carl's original Baja 1000 240Z race car, which he'd only heard about before this.

Carl and Jim fed Jason and put him up in a local motel (typical CTZCC hospitality 8) ) and today they are headed for Jimbo's Z Mecca, where Jason is expected to have some kind of "heart event" when he zees Jim's 22 perfectly-restored low-vin 1969 and 1970 240Zs.

With flooding in East Texas (exactly along his route) and local power outages in Louisiana (where you can't pump gasoline), I wouldn't be surpriZed to hear Jason decide to just hang out there in Z heaven for another day.
Or six.

Frank

Thanks for the update Frank. I'm very jealous as I've never seen Jim Frederick's Z mecca in person - although I have watched the videos.

Jason spent the day with Carl and Jim at jumbo's Z Mecca, hyperventilating.

Jason, Jim and Carl now report they fed Jason at an establishment of higher local class (Hooters) and have said their goodbyes and aimed the Fairlady Z in a N/Easterly direction. They led Jason up onto the highway in their own 240/Fairlady and escorted him into traffic, then waved farewell.

Bernie wanted to zee the ocean on his side of the car, so they navigated right down to the Gulf Coast and followed Rte 98 all along the top of the Gulf panhandle. Hurricane Patricia is still making a mess there at this time, so this isn't a good time to sight-Zee there at the moment. High wind gusts and hours of rain covered the beaches with dead fish and made driving hard. It's also not conducive to camping in a lightweight Z, so they are headed out of Florida. Alabama, Louisiana and Texas lay within their strike over the next day.
S/E Texas has reported flooded roads so I hope Bernie leans them toward a more northernly route until the rain on the plain has a chance to drain. Maybe our esteemed Texas member Jim Arnett can coax them to swing up toward Richardson for a quick visit, to zee his ZCon award winning 1970 240.

Jason reports he has blasted Westbound across the Florida panhandle, thru Alabama and Louisiana, and is into Houston already! There he is being met for lunch by members of the Z Club of Texas. Unfortunately it appears he will not be going anywhere near our member Jim Arnett this trip. Texas is huge and it's a full day's travel btwn most of the cities there. Jim is far north of Jason's planned southern route. Sorry for both of them that they don't get to meet this time.

Jason mentioned that one of his life-long goals was to race in the Baja 500 or 1000, and he wanted to do it in this Fairlady. Of course the car wouldn't survive the race in street trim, and they wouldn't allow Bernie to ride along (without a helmet), but Jason might just swing down that way to take a look.

The Gulf coast is still suffering the effects of hurricane Patricia, so it wasn't looking its best when Jason ran thru it. The beautiful sugar-white beaches were littered with dead fish and snakes and palm fronds, but the locals were already starting to clean it up. So he will ear-mark that area and return there some other trip. It's a great place to vacation.

Frank
