I've got a call from a Nissan dealer a few steps from here in Echterdingen. I know about his Datsun 1600 roadster (1968), saw the car a year ago. The dealer called me to ask if I'm interested, he wants to purchase. Car is in the dealers showroom since ca. 15 years, never driven since it was imported from California. Cylinder head gasket is broken, no title, no documents are existing. Body seems to be quite good, exterior and interior seems to be more or less complete. Guy wants 10.000 Euro, ca 13.000 dollar. Want to you think about this restoration project?

Honestly, over here $13,000 would be far too much for such a restoration project, and ESPECIALLY one which has no title or registration to prove it wasn't a stolen car. 1968 1600 Roadsters are just not that rare here.

The penalty here for receiving stolen property increases with the value of the property. So if I bought this car for $13,000 and then learned it was stolen, I could go to prison for many years AND lose the car. Just buying a piece of it is technically enough to send me to prison for awhile. I don't know about European law, but we are very sensitive here about stealing cars and reselling them.

If the car was a 2000 and had a legal title or registration, it *might* be worth the money. This seller is a car dealership? Ask him if he is willing to title the car before selling it? If he knows it is not stolen, he should have less trouble registering the car than you might have.

What happens to you in Germany if you try to register a stolen car?
