I've been trying to sell my 1984 AE Z, I've listed it on craigslist, auto hunter, this site and other z sites with no luck. I'm not getting many calls or emails. I've gotten 2 responses in the last few months and both lost interest when they learned it was an automatic (which is stated in the ads) I've priced it at 7900.
which I thought was a good price considering the good shape it's in and the mileage (86,800). Why am I having such a tough time selling it? Any advice would be appreciated!

I'm surpriZed this car is still available. It appears faultless from every angle.
You should address rust, rubber (tires & weather stripping), and brakes, and let us zee the engine bay, perhaps, and tell us whether the t-tops leak or not.

The price seems about right for the condition, if maybe a little steep for the soft market.

Frank

I sold my 280ZX on ebay within a week of posting. Their fee was $125 for a $4950 sale. I would also agree that it is important to display lots of pics in the ad and address head-on all the issues people look for in a Z - rust or lack of specifically with pics making your point. On ebay you can post an opening price which is your minimum and hold out for it, or start with a very low opening bid, covering yourself with a minimum acceptable bid. Cost of listing and re-listing if it does not sell is next to nothing. They draw a huge audience. Over 300 people looked at my posting.

I can't believe you let it go for that cheap Phil!

To the original post (I placed this on the for sale ad at first, sorry!):

Albeit being a AE, Z31s just don't command the kind of prices S30s/s130s/Z32s do. Throw in that it is an automatic, and it knocks it down a bit. That being said, maybe in a few years that will change.

To put things in perspective, when I purchased my Z in the spring of '13 in MA, I paid 3500 for a rust free 84 Turbo 5 Speed with ~79k. The only hook is that I have to send a photo of the car each summer to the previous owner.

Well, you're right, Filipe. I did let the 280ZX go cheaply. The young guy who bought it was like a dog with two tails....and good luck to him. He joined the CTZCC the same day. The car will be prized and cared for.
And everything is relative. I lost $5,500 on that car which I owned for 33 years and drove over 100k miles. It was totally reliable - no major repairs at all. And then, thru the club, I had bought a 350Z '03 manual touring with 20k and never driven in the rain, unmarked, red w/black for my old ZX plus $7250. Won't get me any respect at the CTZCC, but it goes like the clappers!
Can't beat those apples!
