Carl, theres not a lot to it. I reported it stolen, didnt hear from the police for several weeks, then its just popped up. They found it abandoned on the side of the road. Just ripped my stereo and dumped it.

You might have seen my Z around the clearwater area. Had her down there when I was stationed in St Pete. Drove it from my house in Port Richey to the USCG base over by the trop quite often.

Ok, back at home trying to replace the ignition.
Any idea how I get tgese out? 2 were Phillips head screws but tge 2 remaining are some sort of flat top or rivet or something.

Use a center punch to get a small depression in the center of the rivet head, then drill them out - just enough to get the head off without opening up the holes underneath.

Must that collar come off? How much damage did they do to your ignition? Can it be repaired with less work?

Oh, and BTW ~ did they find the jerk who did this?

No Frank, its completely trashed. No repairing this one. Thankfully, I have another sitting in my passenger seat right now. I figured Id end up drilling it. Just can't find my drill bits :(
They're around this durn house somewhere....

Got a Dremel tool? They could cut the rivet heads off.

I ended up drilling a groove with my dremmel and using a GrabIt extractor. Worked out. You can see the old ignition here next to its replacement. No fixing this one.

Aww, they really trashed it. No need to go to all that damage to steal a Z. They only have to move the steering lock. Must have been amateurs. Any idea how far they drove it while they had it?

Of course, this is everyone's worst nightmare, so we're all burning with questions about insurance. But that's really your business and not ours (until it happens to us! ). Most of us are insured thru Hagerty or J.C.Taylor or Grundy or one of the other classic carriers. I think you might be the very first member to have suffered a theft ~ AND the very first to have recovered your Z!

As far as insurance goes, I really screwed myself...
When I lived in Key West it was rarely driven so I dropped coverage down to "pleasure vehicle". I didnt do my homework. Didnt include theft coverage at all. Im really lucky the car was recovered. I hate the loss that Ive incurred, but it would have been much worse had it not been found. In all I lost my door skin, driver side lock, ignition, and everything stereo related. I didnt put the stereo in, but I have the receipt totaling $2500. Radio itself, amplifier, sub in the back, 2 speakers near the doors and 2 behind the seats.

It wasnt driven very far. Car was dumped about 15 miles from where it was stolen.

Ive got the new ignition in and everything is working fine. Im deployed again right now so I wont be able to do any more until summer. Since im already replacing the driver side lock Im going to go ahead and put power locks in with a Viper alarm system.

Sounds like they wanted that stereo and took it for a ride to make sure it sounds good. Anyways, how are you going about the door? A whole door or fix that spot. I have one nice door skin that could be used, but underneath of door is rotted. I might have a door as well. Anything else let me know. I got you. only requirement is to love Z's. :D

Probably going to repair it for now. Ive already got some rot on the bottom that I cut out and glassed over. Ill likely end up glassing the lock in until I can find a solid door to replace it.
