This is the same car as was on last year or earlier this year.
I was watching the price, which seemed to plateau at $4000.

I thought, "that car is worth at least $4050 to me, why not give it a try."
But then I suddenly realized, "Maybe Carl or Jimbo is bidding on that
car. I don't want to screw my friends by driving the price up; I'll give
them a call first, to see whether they are bidding."

I called Carl first, and he replied that he had seen it "but that he didn't
have any room left in his garage." Then I called Jimbo, whose reply
was, "Nah, that's too high a VIN number for me!"

But before I could submit a bid it had been withdrawn from the market.

Bids closed at $4393.95 and the reserve wasn't met.
Same as last year, which at $4000 wasn't going anywhere, so was
either withdrawn from the market or came to the expiration deadline.

Last year there was conjecture as to what the reserve might have
been; maybe that will come up again this year on another site. The
conjecture settled around a $10,000 reserve figure. Consequently, my
conclusion is that the car must be worth in the low $4000's and the guy
is overly optimistic about what he could get for the car. If Jimbo and
Carl were unwilling to bid $4000 for this "high VIN car," that would further
support my conclusion, since they are among the best at assessing an
early Z's value.

There are a lot of things that hurt the value of #231 at this point.
1. The economy
2. The fact that it is getting harder and harder to find NOS parts needed for a full restoration, and they are now VERY expensive relative to what they were in 1995.
3. The original engine not being in the car, so there is no way to know if it could be saved, plus the additional expense of a complete rebuild that is more than likely

4. The fact that the seller only shows you the passenger side floorboard from under the car
5. The fact that some pictures are blurry - so you can't really tell if that car has it's original 240Z script badges with the flat chrome Z {these early badges can be very expensive to find/buy today}
6. Wrong carpet set - he had covered the original diamond vinyl on the trans tunnel..

I think the bids in the $4K range are about the best that could be expected for this car today.

FWIW,
Carl B.
